Like every Sabbath day before, I walked bent over through the door.
I tried to hide behind the crowd and stand where women were allowed.
My crippled body felt the sting of censured looks and gossiping.
For eighteen years this agony, had left its mark of pain on me.
The synagogue should be a place, where one was free from such disgrace.
But learned men with books of law, were eager to condemn each flaw.
These Pharisees would turn their head; to them I was as good as dead.
Still I would go each Sabbath day and try to find the words to pray.
That day there were no empty seats; the word had spread throughout the streets.
A famous man would preach that day and all would hear what He would say.
The Teacher opened up the text, but stopped and left the crowd perplexed.
He gently placed the scroll back down. His piercing eyes looked all around.
A murmur rippled through the air; I saw the people turn and stare.
I stretched my neck this way and that, to see what He was looking at.
I thought: “No way! It cannot be!” The Teacher’s gaze was fixed on me?
His eyes were warm and free from blame and then I heard Him call my name.
I trembled when I heard His voice; I knew I had no other choice.
I had to answer His command; I stumbled forward to the Man.
The rulers grumbled and complained: “The rules of law must be maintained.”
“How dare you call a woman here! A woman’s place is in the rear!”
But Jesus took a step toward me and changed my life eternally.
He gently touched me with His hand; my back grew straight and I could stand!
I never knew that I could feel, a touch of love, a touch so real.
He saw me first and called my name but with His touch He healed my shame.
The Pharisees began to fume; their anger filling up the room.
They gnashed their teeth and clenched their fist – to see this woman in their midst.
“This Jesus is a sinful man – to touch this woman with His hand.”
“To violate this holy place – to touch this woman in disgrace.”
But Jesus firmly stood His ground and said, “This woman had been bound.”
“But now my touch has set her free; why can’t you celebrate with me?”
“You blinded fool; you hypocrite! This miracle you can’t admit.”
“But now this woman’s found her place – a daughter who’s been saved by grace.”
I looked at Jesus’ tender eyes and that was when I realized,
His touch had done much more for me than heal my old infirmity.
I danced for joy before my King. I didn’t care who heard me sing!
For sin had bound and crippled me but Jesus’ touch had set me free.
