In some ways, I feel like a jeweler. First, I must look for something beautiful. Usually that is hidden in the ordinary. Then I must take that common experience, and turn it around, to catch the sparkle as the light is diffused. When the radiance breaks through, I must catch it on paper, before the translucence fades. For those moments of glory, of seeing the mystery, don’t last forever ... unless they're caught, and lovingly embraced, and held for others to see.
Someone once said that the art of writing is to put into words what the reader has already experienced. So the writer must learn to sense the common in an uncommon way. To look and see the shimmer on the sand, the crooning necks of the geese as they fly determinedly home, the watery eyes of a mother welcoming home a traveler-child. To listen and hear the heart's deep echo, the stirring of the waves, the crude cry of the crow. To taste and distinguish the sweet, the sour, the bitter, the fine, the slick, the slimy. To feel with one's hands the down on a duckling's breast, the prickles of a frightened porcupine, or the wet dew of the dawn. And to smell the crisp freshness of newly-washed linen, the aroma of a spicy curry, or the perfume of a scented rose.
When our senses awake, or when we consciously cause them to awaken, the world is transformed from light pink to deep red, from pale green to verdant emerald. With washed eyes, we can plunge the intensity and vivacity of the ordinary. And with a searching imagination, we can seek to paint with a full pallet.
Inspiration, then, comes from becoming more fully alive, alive to all the Lord has before us. And the joy of it all is that as we wonder and ponder, He enlarges our understanding, and reveals new delights. Blessed is the one who loves to write!
