TITLE: No Fun -- Mrs. Bunn | Previous Challenge Entry

“Sorry.” Josiah replied, not entirely repentant. Josiah turned his head towards the front but still kept his peripheral vision on Lily Nelson, who in his opinion was the prettiest girl in school. Not that looks was the most important factor, she was also smart and funny, and one of the nicest girls in 12th grade. Josiah worked hard to keep his integrity strong and life focused. But, when he looked at Lily, he had to admit that focusing went right out the window.
“As I was saying class,” continued Mrs. Bunn, “your senior paper is due by Friday. I have given this considerable thought and this year I am asking each of you to write a letter to your future spouse.”
With that one sentence, many gasps, groans and ‘what’s-up-with-that,’ statement was heard in unison. Several hands shot up immediately.
“Yes, Ms. Cannon.”
“Mrs. Bunn, what do you mean when you say write a letter to your future spouse? What are we suppose to say?”
“Good question, Ms. Cannon. I want you to write what qualities you are looking for in a spouse and also how you hope to present yourself to him or her before your wedding day. Still seeing the confusion on Cindi Cannon’s face, Mrs. Bunn became a bit more descriptive. Okay, let’s go a little deeper with this--we all know that God has His standards and guidelines for our lives; so for instance, do you want to remain pure for your spouse and him/her for you? Are you looking for the fruits of the spirit to shine through and that your spiritual life will fit like a tight puzzle to theirs?”
Josiah’s hand flew up.
“Yes, Mr. Weber?”
“How long does this Dear Spouse letter need to be?”
“Your letter needs to be written to the length of a girl’s skirt.” Pausing making sure she had everyone’s attention, she continued. . .
“Long enough to cover the important details but short enough to keep it interesting.” Mrs. Bunn’s expression was like a blank sheet but her eyes held a playful twinkle.
Josiah grinned as he leaned back in his desk processing this statement. “Wow,” he thought, No Fun—Mrs. Bunn had a bit of fun to her after all.
Pulling out his notebook, Josiah titled his page—Dear Future Spouse, and then just sat. What did he want in a spouse?
Looking over at Lily, he noticed that she was writing away. Girls always seemed to know what they wanted. She probably included all her wedding plans in that letter. Curiosity got the best of him as he leaned over to get a glimpse. Lily snatched her paper and held it to her chest.
“What are you doing Josiah?”
Josiah gave her his heart-melting smile and winked. He always found that when caught by a girl the best way to save yourself was to smile and wink, no words necessary. Words get you into trouble, winks get you out. Josiah smiled as he thought about how his mom would always ‘act’ mad, but then dad would smile, wink and somehow she would end up in his lap kissing him. So, if it worked for Dad….
Josiah saw Lily walk towards Mrs. Bunn in her blue uniform skirt. That was a pretty good analogy keeping your paper the length of a girl’s skirt. That definitely worked for him, so long as he didn’t always think of skirts when he wrote a paper.
Dear Future Spouse,
Here is my promise to you—I will guard your heart, protect your emotions, lift up your spirits and keep harm from you. I will treasure you, respect you and honor our vows. I will remain pure in body as I also guard my thoughts. Above all, I will love you as Christ loved the Church.
Lily sat back down and caught Josiah’s eye, she smiled and winked...he melted. Her Mom always said, “It doesn’t take much to make a man happy, just smile and wink, no words necessary.” So, if it worked for Mom….
