Then I met Guido.
Mom said we were too young to get married, but we were in love and so we packed up what little belongings we had and went off to find a place we could call our own. We scoured the countryside, found a nice little cottage out in the middle of nowhere, and called it home.
I will never forget the day Guido carried me over that thresh-hold. For the first time in my life, I felt beautiful, as if I finally belonged somewhere and to someone. I knew God had answered my prayers and although we did not have much, our love provided more than I could have ever imagined.
We cleaned up the old cottage the best we could. Guido was great with his hands and he made me a small prayer area in the far corner of the living room. I went there daily to offer God my praise and thanksgiving for bringing us together and for all He had given us.
We settled rather nicely into our home, but we both knew something was missing, so we decided to start a family. Little did we know at that time, God had planned for us a large one. One by one, they came and after a while, I knew I had all the love I could ever want or need.
Oh, how we loved the sound of their tiny little footprints on the hardwood floors.
The days got busier and busier. Guido would go off to the fields and hunt for food each morning. Sometimes, he would only bring home a scrapping of this or that, but I was a good cook and could turn anything he brought home into a five-course meal.
I home schooled the children, all twelve of them! When the schooling was done, they would help me with the chores. Making sure our home had a warm and cozy atmosphere was important to all of us. Our furnishings were modest and sparse, but we treated them as if they were made of gold, like the throne our heavenly Father sits on. At night after super, Guido would read from the Bible and tell us many of his wonderful stories about faith, love, and hope.
I will never forget that day when Guido and I sat at the kitchen table enjoying a cup of warm tea, when all of a sudden I heard a loud sound. The children were outside playing, so of course I was worried that something had happened to one of them. I jumped off my chair and ran to the window and what I saw frightened me more than one of those big coyotes ever could. It was a sight I hadn't seen since we found this old cottage, and I had prayed many times in my corner, that this day would never come.
The children all scurried into the house squealing and yelling. I looked over to Guido for guidance, and cried out the only word that came to my mind.
"Eek."
Guido was busy comforting the children, as they seemed just as terrified at the sight as I was.
"What are you all so frightened about?" He asked in his most protective voice.
I started to jump up and down pointing my finger at the window and finally in my excitement, I squeaked out. . .
“Humans!"
“Is that all?" Guido laughed.
"They're harmless, we have lived with them before and we can do it again."
He called to the children to follow him and ushered them inside the shelter he had made for us just in case this day would come.
"I promise tomorrow I will set up some traps." He assured me."With the kids help I promise they'll be gone in a couple of days."
Then Guido walked over, picked me up, and carried me over the thresh-hole and into our new tiny little home, well that is until those frightening, creepy, messy humans go away!
