“We are close to the end. Chances are she won’t wake up this time.”
Faith heard her Daddy’s soft sobs before the nurse continued, “Her suffering is almost over. Isn’t that what you want for her?”
The art project that Faith had been holding so tightly slipped from her hand as she reached up to cover her mouth before her gasp could be heard by Daddy and the nurse.
“I’ll do all I can to make her comfortable and to make it easy on her.”
Faith ran from the doorway, down the stairs and outside still holding her mouth closed. She stopped just short of the street. Eyes wide open and mouth tightly closed, she heaved heavy sighs and silent tears slid onto her cheeks. “Not my mom. God please, not my mom,” she thought and she began to pray. Silent prayers of pleading, silent prayers of hope, silent prayers of thanksgiving, and silent prayers of love.
Faith remembered all the times mommy had told her about how long she had wanted a baby. Mommy had prayed and prayed for the baby that God would want her to have. She had prayed silent prayers of pleading for years. Her heart never ceased talking to God.
Faith remembered all the times mommy had told her about how when it was time for her to be born the doctors thought she wouldn’t survive. Mommy had prayed and prayed for her too tiny baby to survive. She had prayed silent prayers of hope until the doctors had declared the baby “a miracle”.
Faith remembered all the times mommy had told her about her name. Faith, because mommy believed every time she thought of Faith, her daughter, she was whispering a silent prayer of thanksgiving to God for her baby girl.
And Faith remembered all the prayers of love she had shared with her family. The silent prayers as they held hands walking in the park. The silent prayers that floated on the laughter around the room on family movie nights. And all the bedtime prayers whispered in the still of the night.
Faith held her lips tightly closed and prayed even when Daddy came out to her, the sparkly sign in his hands.
“Faith, baby, talk to me about what you heard.”
Faith held her lips tightly clasped and shook her head.
“Baby, talk to me about mommy.”
Faith held her mouth closed, but opened her heart wider to God. “Please. God….”
“Sweetheart. You know we have to talk about letting mommy go.”
Faith’s eyes grew wider. Her mouth pursed tighter and her heart swelled larger. “God, It's me, Faith. Can you hear me?”
Daddy took Faith’s hand and led her back in the house. Faith’s art work dangled yarn through the fingers of his other hand. Tears were streaming down his face as they made their way towards Mommy’s bed.
Daddy bent over to kiss Mommy’s forehead and Faith prayed and prayed and prayed, “Please God. Please God. Please God.”
Then he placed the art project above Mommy’s bed. Glitter fell from the words that read:
“…the righteous will live…”
Below the glitter, “BY: FAITH” was written in crayon letters surrounded by a pink heart.
Then in pencil; “Romans 1:17”.
“Oh, baby. The verse is ‘…the righteous will live by faith,’” daddy corrected Faith.
As the glitter floated down to land on the pillow, Mommy’s eyes fluttered open and she smiled at Faith.
“Shhh, daddy. Look…” Faith answered.
