Why did it have to be a friend who chose to betray the Lord?
And why did He use a kiss to show them, that’s not what a kiss is for
Only a friend can betray a friend, a stranger has nothing to gain
And only a friend comes close enough to ever cause so much pain
And why did there have to be a thorny crown pressed upon His head
It should have been a royal one made of jewels and gold instead
It had to be a crown of thorns, because in this life that we live
All who would seek to love, a thorn is all that this world can give
And why did it have to be a heavy cross he was made to bear
And why did they nail His feet and hands, His love would have held them there
It was a cross, for upon a cross a thief was supposed to pay
And Jesus had come into this world to steal every heart away
Jesus had come into this world to steal every heart away.
Words by Michael Card
The words of this song are some of the most profound words ever written about our Lord and Saviour. As with all great love stories, we find in our relationship with our Lord there is passion, wild emotions, joy unspeakable, peace, anticipation and pain. Watching the New Year celebrations on television, starting in Australia with those wonderful fireworks, and then moving slowly from time zone to time zone as each nation on earth welcomed the new year with gay abandon and revelry, I pondered on just how sad the Lord must be.
The cross of Calvary has been long forgotten not only by the world but also to a large extent by those who profess to love Him. Pilgrims, our journey is a life long journey. It is a personal walk with Him. Every day and every hour we should be in His presence. He indwells us through His Holy Spirit, so He is as close as he will ever be, you don’t even have to go and look for Him. He has given you a new song and a new language, so why are you so quiet?
I write these words not to condemn you, but rather to challenge you as we start this New Year. It is time to draw close to Him. The signs of the times of the end of this age are evident everywhere. Jesus is returning very soon and to that end we need to be ready to receive Him. Our lamps should be full and through our lives we should be drawing people into the Kingdom because the fields are ripe to harvest and he needs us to do our part.
The pain of the crucifixion is nothing compared to the disappointment and pain He will experience on His return to find that we have not completed the Great Commission, that as a Church we have fallen asleep or been too busy with the things of this world to care about Him. The words, “Depart from me, I never knew you!” could be the most devastating words we could ever hear. Remember the sudden pain you experience will last for all eternity. Ow! That will hurt.
Dearly beloved, we are a new race of people on this earth. We are the ‘lovers’ and we must do the work of Jesus while it is still light for soon it will be dark and then no man can work. Let us take the sweet presence of Jesus with us as we go out this day and bring a little love into somebody’s life. It’s up to us to remove all the anguish and pain of Calvary and present a beautiful loving pure white bride to our Lord. Go on, I dare you, surprise Him.
