My beloved daughter,
I am white.
Your father, black.
You are brown.
Exquisite from my womb.
The blood in your veins
Neither black or white.
Born to the love
Of a man and woman
Celebrating
The birth of brown.
The color of our love.
They said you’d never find a place
You wouldn’t belong to either race.
You have proved them wrong.
Brown skin, Brown hair,
Brown eyes shining with the pure light
Of a soul on fire with love.
Radiantly splashing your world with joy,
Singing your way through life.
Sure of who you are.
Red and yellow
Black and white
All are precious in His sight.
Perfect in your Father’s mind.
Leading by your quiet example,
You wrote one day on your basketball shoes:
It’s not the talent,
It’s not the skill.
It’s the glory of God.
And so you play and live your life.
My darling daughter.
Sweet. Loyal. Beautiful.
Brown.
The color of my love.
