“Cabbage.”
“Cabbage is green. Did they dye it?”
“No, God just made it that way.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, but if you would like, I could cook it and turn it blue.”
“No way.”
“Way. Didn’t your mother every fix purple cabbage?”
“Not that I remember, but I avoided salads when I was a kid.”
“You still do.”
“Do not. I eat salads when you fix one for me.”
“But, if I don’t fix you a salad, you won’t eat one. Right?”
“Uh, guess so.” He rubbed his chin. “But, does that mean I have to eat the purple cabbage?
“Yep.”
“Mom didn’t make me eat purple cabbage.”
“You said your mother never fixed it.”
“Yeah, we only had green cabbage.”
“So, did you eat the green cabbage?”
“No way.”
“Why not?”
“I dunnot.”
“But, you will eat for me, right?”
“I don’t think so.”
“You wouldn’t eat green cabbage, but this is purple. It’s different.”
“How’s it different?”
“It’s purple.” She held up a leaf. “And, it’s good.”
“Says you.”
“Yeah, says me. I will put some in your salad.”
“I won’t eat it.”
“Cabbage or salad?”
“Maybe both.”
“Here, open your mouth.”
"Why?"
“You have to taste it before you can say you don’t like it.” She held out a piece of cabbage.
“Hey, that’s not bad.” He took another bite. “I guess you can put purple cabbage in my salad.”
“Told ya.”
