It was late. Nancy drew her blinds and turned down her bedclothes. It wasn't quite dark yet, but she was tired. Tired of struggling to keep up with it all. Tired of people losing patience with her forgetfulness. Tired of babysitting to the point of exhaustion with very little appreciation or thankfulness in return. Tired of being alone. John had been her life and strength really. Though she hadn't realized it until it was too late. Oh why? Why did he have to go and leave her like this? How was she supposed to keep going without his support and strength.
“Mom?” ….... “Mom?” Her daughter Jill called from the hallway downstairs. Those rickety stairs – oh, if I only didn't have to climb them.
“Mom?”
“Yes, dear?”
“Could you check on Johnny, since your right up there ?”– I thought I heard a noise in his room.
“Of course, dear.” This with a silent groan, lest Jill were still were within earshot.
Approaching Johnny's room, she stopped just outside his door and listened.
“... And dear God, please help Grammy feel better. I know she doesn't feel good because she didn't want to take a walk in the woods today and she always wants to walk in the woods. It's such fun to walk in the woods, God, and I like to go with Gram 'cause she likes to stop and look at the leaves, and she lets me pick up the bugs 'n things, and she can always find a spotted lizard in the wet places by the rocks.
“Well, guess I won't bother you anymore, God, I know you must be awful busy 'cause there's lots of other kids you have to listen to.” With that, he hopped into bed and pulled the covers up over his head.
Nancy turned quietly away and started back to her room.
“Is everything O.K., Mom”, Jill called again.
“Every thing's fine, Jill, just fine,” Nancy answered from her room as she drew her curtain back from the window just in time to see the most handsome gold and purple sunset she'd ever seen in all her 72 years.
As she gazed with misty eyes at the ever-changing hues her heart responded with a lengthy sigh. Yes, these were the sunset years. Yes, they had their moments of weakness and sorrow, hardship and trial, but didn't all of life? She must remember to keep her eyes focused on the joys and blessings, the treasures and triumphs … the ever-changing kaleidoscope of life's journey through time, and let God answer His little children's prayers.
