It is hard to forget being sent to jail.
“Armed Robbery? I know nothing of this mess!
I’ve been singled out by the way I was dressed.
“If you won’t listen, let me talk to the Chief.
I’ve never handled a gun and I'm not a thief.
I used to run the streets, but it was a different life.
I’ve got a good job and a wonderful wife."
My doctor was concerned when I started sneezing,
and he demanded to see me when he heard me wheezing.
I was still with the doctor when somone robbed a store,
my nose was constantly running and my throat was sore.
The investigators were just ignoring me.
They didn’t seem to care about my innocent plea.
“We have a witness and he pointed you out.
That man dressed in blue. Without a doubt.”
I looked down at my uniform that I wore to work.
It was the thing linking me to some other jerk.
Investigator One leaned back in his chair
bringing the front legs into the air.
“Just tell the truth and confess to the crime
and the DA will go easy on you this time.”
“If you focused on the outfit and not just the color,
you’d be doing your job and looking for another.”
Investigator Two tossed a file right in my face.
I would have done anything to get out of that place.
“We got our man and he’s sitting right here."
He could have said it with a little less cheer.
The door opened and my attorney arrived
I exhaled the stress away as I loudly sighed.
“I heard these guys over here in blue
were trying to force a confession from you.”
Investigator One climbed out of his chair
but forgot that his chair legs were still up in the air.
“Settle down and be quiet, Public Defender Man.
We can make it stick and you know that we can!”
“My client has been sick in bed with the flu.
And you would’ve known if you had a clue.
Telling my client lie after lie,
when he already had an iron-clad alibi.
He was with his doctor when that robbery took place.
It was easy to check if you investigated your case.
My client is leaving right here and now.
You’ve detained him longer than I will allow.”
I was finally getting to leave this place.
I gave my lawyer a hug as tears rolled down my face.
Thanks, Man. I thought my whole life was through,
just for going to work like I was supposed to.
Being in the wrong place and at the wrong time,
Does that justify being accused of a crime?
My attorney leaned back and folded his arms across his chest.
There was more to the story and I needed to hear the rest.
“The gratitude doesn’t belong to me.
It was your grandmother who called, you see.
She explained your charges and before she paid,
she got on her knees, cried and prayed.
Without shyness or shame, she prayed for me and for you.
She asked the Good Lord to show me what to do.
So please be sure to thank your grandmother.
She showed us how to look out for one another.”
