We heard talk about marriage since first grade and it was one of the greatest accomplishments of the female population. If a poor girl wasn’t married by the age of 20, they were labeled an old maid and it stuck for life.
Times have probably changed since that ancient year of memories, but, if a girl wasn’t married by the time they were seventeen or eighteen it was like we were taboo. If one passed the flower days of the early marrying age, those silly mountain men by-stepped us and went searching for the younger blood.
As we left the church picnic that Saturday afternoon, George said, “let’s go walking up to Grovers Spring, we’ll grab a drink of water and go searching for black berries along the hill side. I said, “Ok let me run back a piece and ask momma.”
Momma never let me out of her sight for anything. It was like her eyes were made to be glued on me and her favorite word was no.
As I approached momma and Sister Nora, I could tell that they were lost in the Word, discussing the perils of Daniel and what they could do to help him out a little bit. I stopped them in the middle of the dusty road, touched momma on the arm and said, “Momma, can I go walking with George up to Grovers Spring?” We gonna get a drink of ice water from the spring and search for berries.
Momma left her conversation quickly with a look at me as if, “What did you say”? I’d seen that look before when she was discussing the Word and I knew that she had no idea what I said, and then I heard that special word,“Yes, but don’t be gone too long”! I ran back toward George with a look of amazement all over my face, I said, “You ready to climb”? He clasped my hand and we were off. The climb to Grovers Spring was straight up.
We started up the mountain side watching the sun climb right along with us, getting higher and higher and finally losing itself behind the mountain. I heard the whistle of a blue bird and the sound of eagle wings soaring high above our heads as the blue and white clouds danced romantically all around us. We giggled and laughed all the way up that trail, and then suddenly George stopped walking and took me in his arms and kissed me softly right smack dab on my lips. He took my hands in his and said, “Will you marry me Margie?” My mouth flew open and I said, “Why, I don’t know, I have to ask momma.”
Momma said, “Margie we have no money, where’re we gonna get a dress?” With my mouth still gaping, I said, “Am I hearing you right momma, you gonna let me marry him”? She said, “Why Margie, it is the best offer you have had, since you haven’t had any other offers.”
The next day after church service, George took momma aside and after a couple of minutes, came toward me with a smile as wide as Coopers Cave. He said, “Well Margie, are you ready to be my wife”? I said, “Well, I recon I am.”
He ask me what my favorite color was and I told him green. “Ok,” he said, “The big problem your momma said is a dress. He said, “My dad will go to Taylor Judds dry goods and get the best green dress in that store that is not a problem.”
The next day he came over with a present, I opened it and looked inside. A beautiful velvet green dress took my breath away. Momma looked at it and her eyes got as big as acorns as she jumped back. “Oh no, Margie Ann if you get married in green you will wish you had never been seen”! I said, “But momma that is the downside, what other choice do I have?” “Ok, here goes”, momma said, “Marry in blue, you’ll always be true, marry in pink, spirits will sink, marry in yellow, ashamed of your fella.
I said, “Momma, please don’t go any further and I turned to George and said, “Please go get me a blue dress”!
After all these years of being married to a wonderful man named George, I love him more each day and the words true blue are true.
