Wedged between toddler and teen
Where my mind loves to wander in depth
When the world turns ugly and mean.
For back in the days of my childhood
I was sheltered and clothed and the like;
Hot meals on the table and schooling
Plus a skateboard, a sled and a bike.
No wonder my mind wanders back to those days
When Life handed me everything free;
However, I knew there were others out there
Orphaned by war, and not lucky like me.
But Me? I was granted a Childhood with love
Including a spanking or two;
Or, ah...perhaps, a few more
But who ever counted...Would you?
Childhood, of course, had its downsides too
Like chicken pox, measles and such,
But even the whooping cough wasn't that bad,
Because of my Mother's kind touch.
But now I'm grown and my world is a mess
With problems and bills over due;
So my mind takes a trip back to Childhood Square
Into that short and sweet time it once knew..
Yes, dear heart, there's a short space in time;
Somewhere between toddler and teen,
Where the mind revisits a most blissful place
When we lived - in that Childhood scene.
