“All I’m saying is - if Mom and Dad knew there were going to be girls at Jim’s house, you wouldn’t be going.”
Roger was right, and I hated him for it. I stuffed my wadded swim trunks into the side pocket of the duffle and gave my older brother a warning look.
“They’re not going to find out, are they?” I tried keeping my voice down, so my parents wouldn’t hear through the open door.
“I’m not going to squeal on you, if that’s what you’re wondering. But, I’m not going to lie for you either. If Mom and Dad ask, I’ll tell them that Sandy Jeffers is there too. I can’t believe you even like her. She doesn’t exactly have a pristine reputation. Man, if you ask me, you’re playing with fire.”
“Well, I didn’t ask you!” He goes away for a year of Bible college and comes home as Saint Roger. I should never have mentioned that Sandy would be there. I zipped the duffle, threw the strap over my shoulder and headed out the door. Roger blocked the way.
“I’m not a little kid any more, Roger. I’m sixteen - practically an adult. I can handle it. Now, come off your holier-than-thou kick, and get out of my way. I’ve got a party to go to!” I pushed past him, a little harder than necessary.
“I’ll be praying for you, Davey.”
“Whatever!” I could hear a horn blare from the driveway.
After saying a quick good bye to my parents, I jumped into Jim’s Grand Am, and we were off. It was going to be a great night filled with hot dogs, marshmallows, bonfire, swimming, and Sandy Jeffers.
If I could only get Roger’s comments out of my head, I’d be able to enjoy myself.
Jim’s folks had the biggest house on the lake. Sandy was already there when we arrived. She and Helen were sprawled on their beach blankets, soaking up the evening sun. I stopped and stared in appreciation.
“I think you’re drooling there, Dave.”
I gave Jim a playful shove and then boldly strolled over to the girls.
“Anyone need some bug repellent?” I asked, picking up a bottle from where it lay in the sand.
“That’s suntan lotion,” Helen giggled.
I took a closer look at the bottle. I could feel my cheeks flush. Way to go, Dave! You’re sure to impress her that way.
Sandy stood, brushing the sand off her skin.
“Helen and I were just going to take a dip in the lake. Want to come with us?” She flashed me a mischievous look.
“Yeah!” I eagerly accepted her invitation.
The girls sauntered away, as I rushed into the house to change into my trunks.

The fire died to a soft glow. Jim and Helen had retreated to the house, escaping the mosquitoes. Sandy and I sat close to the smouldering embers.
“Do you love me?” Sandy asked, rubbing her finger up my arm, sending tiny electric bolts up my spine.
“I like you a lot.” I hated the way my voice betrayed my nervousness.
“Then kiss me, Davey.” Sandy closed her eyes in anticipation. I swallowed - twice. My mouth was suddenly dry.
“I’ve never done this before.”
“I’ll teach you.” Sandy’s emerald eyes looked deeply into mine. Her hand came to rest on my thigh.
You’re playing with fire!
I jumped up, causing her to fall over in the sand. What am I doing? Help me get out of this.
“What’s wrong?” She asked seductively. “All I wanted was a little kiss.” She pushed her lips down into a pout.
“I can’t.”
“Don’t you want to?” She stood and wrapped her arms around my waist.
“Of course I want to, but I can’t.” I pulled away.
“I guess I figured you wrong, Dave. I thought we could have some fun together.” Her eyes flashed an angry green.
“I’m sorry, Sandy.”
“Give me a call when you grow up.” Sandy’s stinging remark hung in the air. She spun on her heals and stalked back to the house.
I pulled out my cell and dialled home. Roger answered.
“How’s the party?”
“Could you pick me up?”
“I’ll be right there. Is there anything wrong?” I was relieved to hear concern, not condemnation in his voice.
“I’ve been an idiot! You were right, bro. I almost got burned tonight.”
