“Hey, Bud. How’re you? I’m fixing the tractor.”
“Why?”
“So we can plow up the dirt.”
“How come?”
“After we do that, we can plant our garden.”
“Can I drive?”
“Good morning, Buddy. You’re up early.”
“What’s that thing, Grampa?”
“It’s a rake I use to take weeds out.”
“Why?”
“The weeds steal the water and food from the plants we started.”
“Oh… I’m a good digger.”
“G-R-A-M-P-A-A-A-A, where are youuuuuuuu?”
“Look down the hill… here I am.”
“Can I come, too?”
“Sure, Bud. How ‘bout you help me drive the mower over to the field?”
“Help me up, Grampa.”
“Buddy, come over here. Grampa has something to show you.”
“Okay. Is it a present?”
“Sort of. Let me lift you up here. Now look over by the big cow.”
“Grampa, there’s a little cow.”
“Yup. That little cow is called a calf. It’s Belle’s baby.”
“I gotta tell Mom. Thanks, Grampa. M-O-M-M-A… come see a s’prise.”
“Grampa, where you going?”
“It’s time to go pick beans, Bud. Do you want to help?”
“Okay, but can I eat ‘em now?”
“Sure thing. Just make sure we take enough in to your Mom for dinner.”
“Grampa, this is itchy….oh, look, Grampa, there’s a little snake over here.”
“I know, Bud. Leave it be.”
“Okay, Buddy, it’s your turn now. Which corn do you want?”
“The big one, Grampa.”
“All right, then. How’s it taste?”
“M-m-m-m-m, ‘s good.”
“Pretty yummy, I agree.”
“Well, Bud, did you enjoy your visit?”
“Uh-huh. Grampa…?”
“Can I come again?”
“Sure, Buddy, summer’s best when I’ve got you as my helper.”
