They were so very different, the two of them. Tim was pale complexioned and fair haired. He even wore light colored clothing. The days almost always found him in a white t-shirt, khaki shorts, and tan canvas sneakers. Christi, on the other hand, was what one might consider a dark character. She had near-black eyes and hair to match. She almost always wore black clothing and many called her “Goth”, though Tim completely disagreed.

As if their outward appearances did not separate them enough, their characteristics and behaviors also worked to make them appear different. Tim was bright and vibrant, always light and joking; a deep contrast to the quiet, brooding personality of the dark Christi. She was a thinker. People often mistook her quietness for standoffishness. On all counts, they were an unlikely pair.

It irritated Tim when people talked about how different they were. “The proverbial night and day,” they would say. He heard their whispers saying what a good boy he was and how she was no good and would inevitably corrupt him. “You just have to look at her to know…doesn’t come from the same stock…” How very wrong they were! He wondered why people put so much significance into appearances without ever getting to know the person. Tim felt the coin in his pocket. Fingering its texture, he smiled and pulled it out to look at it.

“It’s us,” Christi had said when she gave it to him. It was an ordinary coin. Just a plain quarter, nothing special really. And yet it was so very special because it did symbolize them…two sides of the same coin. Each side was different in almost every detail yet pressed together they were exactly the same inside.

That was him and Christi! Opposite on the outside yet their hearts, their beliefs were the same. She was the only one he’d ever been able to share with fully. Her knowledge and her love of the Lord were vast and deep. He loved that about her. In fact, he loved her!

He slipped the coin back into his pocket, feeling the other treasure he had secured inside. It was a ring. Happiness tugged at his lips. They would graduate next week. He had already made arrangements to go away to Bible College in the fall. And he wanted Christi to go with him…..as his wife. He knew she didn’t have the opportunities he had. She’d told him time and again not to worry. God would take care of things for her; that He had a plan for her life. But he’d seen the longing in her dark eyes as she’d helped him fill out his paperwork. More importantly, the thought of not having her with him on a daily basis filled his heart with a dark hole. He couldn’t bear it and he knew….God’s plan was for “them”. They were one coin; she made it possible for him to be who God wanted him to be. Their differences were all an outer illusion.

He’d already talked it over with both of their parents and now, he was going to meet Christi just like they did every Saturday morning. She’d meet him at the top of the hill with her picnic blanket and the basket filled with goodies. They’d eat and talk about dreams; mostly his. Today he hoped his would become hers.

She looked stunningly beautiful sitting there in the field of wildflowers; her dark hair and clothing a deep contrast to the soft yellows and greens surrounding her. The glow of God’s love surrounded her, as always.

“What?” she asked as he dropped down beside her. He was unable to suppress his excitement, much as a child with a secret.

“Christi, I….” His words caught. This was a big step. They’d always been just friends. He swallowed hard and removed the ring from his pocket, holding it out to her. The diamond set in black onyx was housed in a band mixed of gold and silver; an exquisite piece of jewelry.

“What is this, Tim?” She looked from the ring to her friend with uncertainty. Again he saw longing in her dark eyes. He smiled again. He was certain. He knew it was God’s plan.

“Marry me, Christi.” It was more of a statement than a question as he slipped the ring on her finger. It was a perfect fit just like the coin in his pocket and the two unlikely friends.
