Of the gutter and the lonely street,
Of hopelessness and thrash can food,
Nights spent in fearful solitude.
It speaks to me of alleys bleak
Where dampness clings and sewers reek,
The vacant stares of hooded souls
Trapped and lost in this awful hole.
It shouts aloud of hopes suppressed,
Of jackboot force and hearts depressed,
Of freedom lost to hellhole cells--
A place where evil power dwells.
"Down" clearly points to things of death,
Of sin and Hell and cold damp earth,
Dispiriting the heart and mind--
How can I leave it all behind?
If from this state I could but rise,
Escape this darkness I despise?
I cry aloud to God above--
He lifts me out in gracious love.
He lifts me up on eagle's wings;
In ecatasy my spirit sings,
Where faith and hope and love combine
To free my heart and soul and mind.
"Up" speaks to me of sweet release,
A place of love, a life of peace;
It speaks to me of joyful sounds
Where exultation knows no bounds.
Heaven's my promised dwelling place,
Beyond confines of time and space
Where "up" will reach eternity
And "down" is wiped from memory.
