Gazing off at the hills far away;
The blue haze of their peaks down the long decades speaks
Treasured thoughts of a much simpler day
.
In my heart I’d abscond to the places beyond
The horizon marked out by those hills;
There, I’d while away time, tripping off in my mind
To a land filled with treasures and thrills.
Dad, one day, said to me that those hills I could see
Marked out Ireland’s westerly shore,
That all those who went past rarely ever came back;
Once gone, you would see them no more.
His three sisters left home, crossed the wide raging foam,
Which from now on would keep them apart;
On recalling the day when they went far away
Brought a lonesome ache to his heart.
My dreams were all changed, now this land had a name
To which I am bonded by blood;
I have family ties which no mountains can hide
And I’d never wish that they would.
I might go there one day, see the great U.S.A.
That land of my fancy, it seems,
Meet those cousins of mine who are my kith and kind
And fulfill all my childhood dreams.
