“You simply can’t have that baby! You are just a young girl, and your going to ruin your life. Who is going to want you if you’re dragging around a child everywhere you go? Have you even considered an abortion? You can have one done without anyone knowing about it. Besides, how is your boyfriend going to react when he finds out that you’re pregnant?”
The tears flowed down her face as she held her head in her hands, and then spoke in a gentle voice.
“That’s another problem. Joe doesn’t even have a clue that I’m pregnant, because, well, y-y-y-you see…”
The young girl could not compose herself as she looked into her friend’s eyes and blurted out… “It’s not even his child!”
Her friend was stunned. The look on her face went from horror, to anger, to disbelief, and then slowly changed to a more companionate, gentle continence. She held her friend in her arms and let her bury her head in her shoulder. She new that now was the time for love, and not ridicule. After about five minuets of obsessive crying the young girl raised her head and spoke.
“I’m so happy.”
“What! Are you crazy? Are you saying that you’re going to have this baby anyway?”
“Yes, I am.” Her response was spoken with much determination.
Her friend went from compassion back to disbelief and anger.
“Do you have a death wish for this child? It’s never going to have a chance in this world. You are not thinking with your head. How can you be so unfeeling toward others, especially your fiancée? His friends will ridicule him the rest of his days! He won’t be able to hold his head up in this town, you’ll see to that!”
Instead of tears, a confident smile graced the young girls face, and as she gathered her things to leave, said. “I will let you know how it ends up. Pray for us won’t you, please.”
Reluctantly frustrated… her friend sighed, and then agreed. Now was coming the next big challenge. She had to face her fiancée.
She went to him and told him of the situation. His eyes filled with huge tears, but his love for her won out, because a short time later he reassured her by insisting they be married.
In the days to come they counted down the moments together. The days had their share of woes, but they faced them with one heart. Instead of discarding the child for the sake of convenience, they thanked God for the gift that was about to occur.
“What shall we call the child, Joe?”
Joe was not a man of many words, but spoke proudly.
“I’m told that we should call him… Jesus!”
Mary and Joseph stopped at an Inn to see if there would be room for them that night in Bethlehem.
