The Mediator

Chilling, at three in the morning, we lay around listening to music. The “60’s” were in full swing, love, peace, and rock and roll was our rallying call. We were a generation in turmoil, rebelling against the boring morals and restrictive standards of our parents. We tuned into the prophets of our time, following their exciting lifestyle and believing their words of wisdom. Simon and Garfunkel were singing, The Sounds of Silence, “Hello darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk to you again….” then on to our favourite tune, Bridge over Troubled water, later still, Leonard Cohen sang his haunting, So long Marianne, followed by Lady Midnight. Slowly, without realizing it, we were drawn into the Age of Aquarius, a “New Age” of enlightenment with all its weird beliefs and practices.

Our rite of passage from pimply adolescents to young adults occurred during a turbulent time in world history. For the first time, the youth challenged their parents belief system. A system that was perceived by us to be rigid and inflexible based on the word of a strict, angry God. According to us, He was no fun at all. Lucifer jumped on the bandwagon and his prophets arose, spouting a perverted philosophy drawn from Eastern Religion. It sounded so good and easy that we followed blindly, each empowered by our own sense of freedom, power and knowledge.

Reflecting back on those years, I am saddened that my transition or bridge from adolescence to adulthood was so badly influenced by Lucifer’s cheap gospel. How often do we listen to a song not really understanding the words or the writer’s intended meaning? Nice tune! Just sing along, follow their lifestyle and believe that they have found the true way to happiness. How naive we were and how far we deviated from our true purpose in God’s plan for our lives.

When they sang about a “bridge over troubled water,” they were actually singing about the Rainbow Bridge, known as the “Antahkarana,” which “the New Age Movement” claim is a bridge that they are building between the soul of man and Lucifer. Who knew? Subtle, but extremely effective, because before you know it, that idea has taken root in your subconscious, and you begin to believe that the New Age does indeed have a “bridge” for those troubled times, and that they do know the true road to happiness. All you have to do is follow their doctrine and everything will turn out just fine.

Bridges are support structures. 1 Timothy 2:5 states; “For there is one God, and one Mediator (bridge) between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all.” How wrong we were back then. It has taken me a lifetime to correct those early mistakes, but perhaps I needed to cross those other bridges in order to find out just how shaky their foundations were.

On meeting the real Bridge Builder, I found aqueducts that carry streams of living water to my parched soul. He has restored or built new bridges in my life. Daily, He adds new ones to my journey. For instance, there is a “Bascule” bridge, a bridge that is raised or lowered using counter weights. In order to cross it, certain conditions have to be met. There is the “suspension” bridge that hangs supported by cables and speaks of depending on His word in faith to hold it up. A stringed instrument has a bridge over which strings are stretched. This speaks of how He stretches us so that we can be part of His orchestra, making beautiful music as we follow His leading. There are of course the broken bridges, our failures that require His skill to rebuild. Starting again from scratch they are the learning curves essential for our growth. For the adventurous there are the “Bungee Jumps” from bridges, where we can face our fears and take a leap of faith, believing that He will catch us. Finally there is the bridge of a ship, a platform from which the Master can guide His vessel through the stormy seas of life into a safe harbour.

Oh! If only I had followed the “Jesus Movement” in 60’s and listened instead to the music of Keith Green, “There is a Redeemer, Jesus Gods own Son, Blessed Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One,” my transition from pimples to stubble would have been so much easier and much more fun.
