Grandpa was merciless. If little Gordon wanted to win he’d better get sharp. He really had to be better than that wily old man.
“Snap!” “Nap!”
“Bit slow ole mate” teased the elderly man, collecting his pile of cards and shaking them at his little opponent.
“Go easy on him.” Grandma went in to bat for her youngest favourite.
“Go easy my foot! He’s got to learn to be a man. I’m not having him be namby-pamby pampered little softy. If he wants a slice of life he has to earn it. Too much pandering to the ignorant young these days. They want everything and they know nothing. Not my boy. He wants everything and he has to know how to get it.”
“Oh, dear,” Grandma knew when to back down. He could be a tough old customer, but he certainly was successful – and generous! “Are you ready for your afternoon tea now?”
“Well, yes. I wondered if ever that was coming!” But the dancing grey eyes belied any impatience.
“Nap. Nap Grandpa! Look, there’s two cats.” With great ceremony Gordon collected the cards, and exactly as his grandfather had done, he waved them in the grinning face of his formidable opponent.
“Aha! I see I have some serious competition here.” Grandpa put on his serious face. “I’ll have to get a grip on myself and win those cards right back. See here, Grandma, what happens when I get distracted by your questions. This young man goes and takes my cards off me. What do you think of that?”
“I think he’s a very clever young chap”
“Yeah. Chip off the old, old block I’d say. Well, come on young fella. Let’s see if we can finish this game in time for afternoon tea.”

“Snap! Gotcha!

“Snap! Come on. You’re giving it to me easy.” The pup danced up to Grandpa, tail wagging and mouth full of soft toy. Grandpa grabbed a leg and proceeded to tug of war with one hand and continued playing his cards with the other.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
“Snap! Gotcha.”
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
“Snap! Ouch! Hey, you little varmint. You leave my hand alone” and he took careful aim at the soft toy before making a grab.
“Nap! Gotcha Grandpa!” Gordy collected quite a pile of cards this time and smirked gleefully.
Grandpa winked at Grandma and she smiled indulgently back at him.
“What are you winking at Grandpa?”
“Oh, I always wink at a pretty woman Gordy. Don’t you think Grandma is just the prettiest woman round these parts?”
Gordy looked around as if for another possibility, and nodded.
Shyly, “My mum’s pretty too.”
“You’re right about that. Snap!”
“Oh! You’ve got a big pile Grandpa.”
“I worked for it. I got it.”
“I work too Grandpa.”
“Better work harder then.”
They both began to study those cards like the ranch depended on it.
“Snap.”

“Where’s that tea, Grandma?”
“Coming up right away.”
“Nap”
“Well, now, I’ll be blowed. Ain’t you just the clever fella? Look at that Grandma. He’s gone and won the last card.”
“Looks like you’ve got a big deal player on your hands Grandpa. You’re just going to have to lift your game if you want to beat that young man. Here is your tea, and some buns just fresh from the oven”
“You’re a champion, Grandma. When you get married, Gordy, make sure you marry a champion, just like your Grandma. Champions gotta have champions in the family. Ain’t no good havin’ a second rater.”
“I’m gonna marry my Mum, Grandpa. She’s a champion.”
“You’re right about that Gordy. Your mum’s a champion.”
“Wuff, wuff. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Wuff, wuff”
