“Marybeth, shush!” Mother said sternly.
A little quieter, Marybeth began, “Sir William Scott…”
“Marybeth!”
Marybeth looked into her mother’s piercing stare, "What?”
“You must be quieter.”
“But I’m naming my dog, he needs a name.”
“Marybeth, that’s ridiculous. We don’t even have a dog and we ARE NOT getting a dog!”
“Jesus told me I would get a dog,” Marybeth matter-of-factly replied.
“Is that so, and Jesus just spoke to you and told you that, huh?” Mother retorted.
Marybeth shifted, but replied to defend herself against her mother’s disbelieving stare, “I was saying a prayer to Him and He whispered it in my head.”
Mother snorted a laugh, “And so now you think I will buy you a dog, well that’s not happening Marybeth so get it out of your head.”
“I have fith, Mother.”
“It’s called faith, Marybeth, not fith, get it right!”
“I have faith!”

Marybeth felt lost in the swarm of people, most dressed in black. “Why do they do that, it’s so dark,” she thought. Daddy was across the room, his face grave. Mother’s death was unexpected and everyone kept looking at Marybeth with compassionate eyes.
Marybeth looked up, “I wish they would all stop staring at me,” she quietly told Jesus. Marybeth didn’t feel as sad as she thought she should about Mother. She really didn’t understand what she was feeling except that she couldn’t wait to get away from all these people.
Marybeth quietly slipped away into the closet under the stairs. “Jesus, I do hope Mother is with you, but I’m so afraid. Pastor said the way to heaven was to give our life to you and Mother was always too worried about what she wore to church and who would be there. I don’t know why but she still pretended like she was married to Daddy because she didn’t want people to know she was divorced. I don’t even know if she ever prayed to you.”
Knock, knock, “Marybeth, are you in there?”
“Coming.”

Marybeth was playing under the old Willow Tree while Grandma sat reading on the porch swing. Marybeth heard Daddy’s truck chug into the driveway. When he came through the back door, Daddy’s face was brimming with a huge smile.
“I have a surprise for you, Marybeth,” he exclaimed.
“You do, what is it Daddy, what is it?” Marybeth jumped up and down in excitement.
Daddy led the way around the side of the house to his truck and inside the truck bed, there he was, “Sir William Scott Duncan!” Marybeth screeched.
A fluffy excited golden-haired puppy jumped out of the truck to greet Marybeth with a multitude of kisses.
“Oh Daddy, I love him!”
“Jesus told me that we needed a puppy.”
Wide-eyed, Marybeth asked, “He did and Daddy, how did he tell you, I need to know.”
“He whispered it in my head and I just knew it was right for my favorite girl in the world.”
“Oh Daddy, I’m so happy that Jesus talks to you too, I was afraid…I was just afraid that you didn’t know Him.”
“Jesus saved my life, my sweet girl, and I will never be the same. When He tells me to do something, I know I must listen.” Daddy rustled with the puppy. “Do you think Sir William Scott Duncan likes his new home?” he asked.
“I think so Daddy, look at his tail wagging. I think Jesus whispered in his head too and told him about his new home before he ever got here. I think Sir William Scott Duncan must have fith, I mean faith, too.”
