It broke her heart to hear them talk of the discomfort of pregnancy, the joy of feeling their baby move for the first time and the sense of competition as to who had the most complicated delivery. She would give all she had for the joy of suffering such pain.
Her friends tried to understand how she felt about being barren, but had no clue of the dire hopelessness of it. Only those who suffer infertility could possibly relate to the death of your sweetest dream. She knew no one among her peers with whom she could discuss this with, and so she bore it alone. She was as an orphan yearning for a family.
Being with her friends and having the privilege of caring for their babies for a few precious moments only intensified her desire for one of her own, a desire that went back to the Garden of Eden where God placed within a woman that nurturing spirit which could not be quenched until she held her baby in her arms. Like Hanna, she had gone to prayer with whispered words and flowing tears. God responded by planting a seed of hope within her heart that sparked life into the impossible. Adoption!!!
Grasping this lifeline, she and her husband applied. God went before them and paved the path for their application to be accepted. They were advised that before the placement of a child, their history would be checked extensively. This was a great concern to both of them since, even though they had been married five years, they were still very young and had very little financial resources.
The waiting was to her a gestation period without the physical discomfort. What she did feel, however, was far worse, the fear of rejection at the end. The unknown can be devastating and carry you to places no one wants to go. If in the end they were denied, what else could they do? It would be death to their heart’s desire and to life itself. For her, life without a baby of her own would simply be a matter of existing.
Her case worker, Susan, advised her of the day the board members met each month to match babies to prospective parents. Each month she waited for the call, and each month her heart was broken. Would they ever be considered a match to a miracle? Then, at last, the day of rainbows came. They were nearly through dinner when the phone rang. It was Susan. She wanted to know if they could meet the following day to see a baby girl the board members thought perfect for them.
She floated in a state of euphoria as she prepared for that awesome moment. They arrived at the agency, and were ushered into an office where Susan sat behind a desk holding the most beautiful baby she had ever seen with blue eyes, blond hair and a smile that called out “mama.” At that moment her heart was pierced with what felt like a lightening bolt. A sense of completeness washed over her in wave after wave of pure motherly love as this precious gift was placed in her arms. Tears of joy and words of praise and thanksgiving were whispered again and again to her heavenly Father who had heard her prayers and had given them a portion of His very own heart in a little baby girl they would call Hope.
