Topic: Mother (as in maternal parent) (04/24/08)
Last night, they told me my son was condemned to die.

For the longest time, I’ve had a premonition that this day would come. I haven’t missed the unusual ways he acted. I’ve heard the way people talk about him. From the day he was conceived, I’ve known he was different; that he was born to shake up the world around us. I’ve believed he has a special purpose.

And so, my heart was torn. I love my son and don’t want to lose him. When I think of the prospect of him being crucified…I don’t think I could bear it. No matter what they say about him, he’s my little boy.

I carried my son inside my own body, and I cradled him in my arms. I made his clothes and helped him learn to walk. Though his real father was not there, he had a wonderful stepfather and we worked together to train our son in his father’s profession. He is the source of my hopes and dreams. He is the source of my joy.

When he became a man and grew away from us, I despaired. I knew many supported him; yet, many others called him terrible names and said awful things about him. I defended him and never stopped loving and praying for him.

After the verdict came, I felt as if I were condemned along with him. I cannot imagine a life without my son. All night long I lay awake and prayed for God to intervene. All night long, I prayed for a miracle. Please, God,” I prayed. “My son is special. You know how special he is. Can you not spare him? I know he can do more here, on earth, than in the afterlife?”

I believe in the power of a mother’s prayer; just the same as anyone else. Yet, no one was more amazed than I when my son came walking through our door this morning. I couldn’t believe it.

“Barabbas! What has happened?”

“Mother, I must tell you. I’ve met the most remarkable Man…”

What a neat POV! I liked the twist at the end, at first, I wasn't quite sure, but you clued me in and at the end, I was glad to see that I was write. Nice job with this, thanks for sharing! ^_^

Another great piece, Donna. So often we focus on one thing and there's another message hidden in a story. I plan on meeting Barrabas in heaven - after all, who else is more typical of someone who Jesus died for?
