Topic: Illustrate the meaning of “All that Glitters is Not Gold” (without using the actual phrase or literal example). (01/24/08)
As I rounded the corner, Kate gave me the "Hunk Alert" signal. Her eyes were sparkling and I scooted over to check it out.

"Who is it?" I whispered. I looked around the room and wondered who she'd found. This monthly gathering of the Christian Singles group hadn't yielding any promising guys yet, in my opinion. So, I was really interested in her find.

"There," she said, with a nod of her head. She whispered back: "Brown hair, black shirt, and jeans. That guy over in the corner … he just asked me for my number!"

I looked over in the direction she'd hinted at, but my expectations were instantly dashed. I bent close to ask her "That guy next to Todd? The one with the glasses?"

"Yeah, isn't he cute? And he's really nice, too! I just talked to him, and he's really into Bible study."

I groaned. "Yes, he is cute. But I'll bet the only book of the Bible he's interested in is the Song of Solomon."

She did a double take. "No way, Mandy! He told me he's going on a mission trip to Ireland this summer, and he talked all about the Lord, and how he's part of a prayer team, and..."

I gestured her over to the hallway, where we could talk a bit louder. “Kate, I don't have any right to judge anyone, and I don't want to say he's a liar. Maybe he is a Christian. But I met him last summer, while you were at camp. He charmed me with his lines about his walk with the Lord, too. I went out with him to a Newsboys concert and he was really nice and charming. Everything was all about the Lord until we were parked in front of my house. Then, he was all over me like a body cast and kept trying to tell me that God understood our urges. When I reminded him of what the Bible said, he told me I was old fashioned. He insisted that the verses about purity were as outmoded as stoning or animal sacrifice.

I could see she was still reluctant to believe me. "Maybe he's changed, Mandy. Maybe he's not that way, anymore."

"You're right, Kate. God can change anyone - and Lord knows I'm not perfect, either. Talk to him and see what you think - but don't go someplace alone with him until you're sure. Words are cheap; it's the way you act that shows the truth."

Kate crinkled her forehead in thought. "Why would a Christian guy be like that? And, if he’s not a Christian, why pretend to be one and come here to look for Christian girls? There are plenty of girls who'd probably love to be with a cute guy like him."

"I don't know, Kate. Who can explain why people do the things they do? All I know is what happened to me, and I don't want it to happen to a friend, if I can help it."

"Thanks," she sighed. "Now I don't know what I'll do if he calls me."

"Pray about it. After all, you don't have to decide now, do you?"

"Nope," she replied. Her frown remained on her face for a few seconds, then her usual smile returned. "Let’s find something else to do. Hey, there's Connie. She looks like she's trying to organize a game of Bible Trivia. That sounds like fun. C'mon, it's my turn to win."

"In your dreams," I scoffed, but laughingly followed her toward the group gathering around the game board.

Nice entry, hope the poor guy has changed! Great dialog, sounded very realistic. Keep up the good words.

Enjoyed this read - the dialog felt very realistic.

A bit more showing rather than telling might have spiced this up a bit - maybe have one of the girls interact with "Casanova." Just a thought.

Perfect title, too.

I enjoyed reading this. It is an interesting comment on the problems of dating--and especially those that consider themselves, "Christian" when they really aren't at all concerned about anyone but themselves.

Good article, but would have liked some action by Casanova himself. Shows that we need to be careful regardless if someone has a "Christian" label on them - whether it's dating or anything else.
