“Oh, Dawn, that’s what I called to tell you. -- We’re getting married!”
“Huh? …What? Married? But you just met him like what, five weeks ago?”
“He’s perfect Dawn.”
“But you barely know each other.”
“It was love at first sight...”
“That’s what you said about Zane.”
“That was different. Zane was… immature. Besides, I’m older now.”
“You’re 23. Why rush things? If he’s really the one, he’ll wait.”
“I know, but we already have our tickets. We fly to Vegas next weekend!”
“Vegas? Next weekend!? …Your family and friends won’t be there?”
“Zach doesn’t want a big wedding. He says it’s more romantic this way.”
“What did your Mom say?”
“She’ll calm down, eventually. Maybe once she meets him...”
“She hasn’t met him yet?”
“No. He’s really busy. Of course he makes time for me.”
“What does he do?”
“Something to do with computers, you know how non-technical I am.” Charlotte laughed.
“So if he’s so busy, why next week?”
“Well, he ships out the following week for basic training.”
“He just joined the military?” asked Dawn. “Talk about a quick honeymoon.”
“It’s just for like, six weeks, and then he’ll be back home.”
“Where will you live while he’s gone, with your folks?”
“I guess so.”
“Charlotte, are you sure you’ve thought this through?”
“You sound just like my mother.”
“I’m sure she just wants the best for you, and so do I.”
“Well, Zach’s the best. Honest.”
“So why not wait? I don’t get it.”
“Well… we reallywant to, um, you know. He’s such a hunk Dawn. Of course I told him we have to wait till the wedding night...”
“That sounds like you’re ovulating, not in love.”
“We’re soul mates, Dawn. We haven’t gone a day without talking to each other since we met.”
“Talking. …How many times have you seen him?”
“A whole bunch, like 12 maybe? He’s so cute…”
“Has he met any of your family?”
“Uh-uh, he doesn’t have a car so I pick him up.”
“Then you’ve met his family?”
“No… they live out of state. But I may get to meet them at his graduation, at the end of basic. He says he’ll fly me out there for it. Won’t that be cool?”
“You’ve met his friends…?”
”What is this, a deposition or something?”
“I just think you’re rushing things. It’s not like you.”
“Exactly, that proves it. He’s perfect. He’s the one Dawn. From the moment I laid eyes on him, I just knew.”
“I think you’ve been reading too many romance novels. They’re fiction you know. Real love doesn’t happen like that. It takes time…”
“You’re just jealous.”
“Sorry, I just don’t believe in marriage at first sight.”
“Hold on a sec, that’s my other line.
…Gotta go, that’s my fiancé. Talk to you soon. And don’t be such a worrywart. I know what I’m doing.”
-----------
“Hello?” said Dawn. There was no voice on the other end of the line, just uncontrollable sobbing. “Charlotte?”
“I-i-it was awful…,” she sobbed, “The whole thing…”
“Where are you? What happened?”
Once Charlotte calmed down, she continued. ”The hotel was so… cheap and the “church” was like, tacky. I just couldn’t go through with it.”
Thank you God, prayed Dawn. “And Zach…?”
In between sobs, the story came out. “He went ballistic, mostly about all the money he’d spent. And seriously, the motel was like, Bedbug City. …He even expected me to, you know, even though we didn’t go through with the wedding.”
“So you broke up?”
“Y-y-y-es,” she sobbed, ”How could I have been so stupid?”
“Stupid would’ve been marrying him.”
That got a little chuckle. “It must’ve been like, the shortest engagement ever.”
“Some celebrities have quicker marriages.”
“Next time, I’ll date the guy for like five years or something first.”
“Good idea.”
“I’m beat; I just got in a little while ago. Thanks Dawn… I wish I’d listened to you and Mom before the trip…”
“You’ll recover, just like you did with Zane, right?”
“Yup, and I know just the man to take my mind off of Zach.”
Oh no, not again...
“I met this wicked nice guy on the plane coming home. Zebediah…”
“Maybe you should avoid guys whose names start with ‘Z’?”
Charlotte laughed. “He’s nothing like Zach or Zane. I mean, Zach wasn’t all bad. It’s just… we have like, totally different priorities. It takes time to really get to know someone, ya know?”
