Cross the creek and down the road,
Where the breeze was always gentle
And the hayfield freshly mowed.
On an eighty acre homestead,
That had field corn on the ear,
Lived a farmer and his lady
Known as Ed and Mrs. Greer.
Each morn while bacon sizzled,
Through the window pane Ed gazed
At his lush and verdant cornfield
And the steer that nearby grazed.
‘Twas the talk of Baxter County
This three-quarter ton prize steer,
A Hereford they called Wellington,
Pride of Ed and Mrs. Greer.
The corn was past the tassel stage
With not a weed or thorn.
The market futures brightly gleamed
With four buck a bushel corn.
They hoped for record harvest
And a profitable year,
Dreams the bank account would swell
Of Ed and Mrs. Greer.
Their prospects rich with golden grain,
Then pesky thoughts arose
‘Bout the fence post that was leaning
Pressing corn down in the rows.
Last winter when the snow fell,
“Why didn’t you persevere,
Grab hammer, nails and mend the fence?”
Queried Mrs. to Ed Greer.
Then came springtime with the planting,
Where from sun to sun he sowed.
That left no time to fix the fence
That listed, swayed, and bowed.
And with the summer’s sunshine
And fishing off pond’s pier,
No thought about the fence occurred
To Ed or Mrs. Greer.
More than bacon started sizzling
The next morning when Ed peered
Out the window at the pasture
For Wellington disappeared.
And corn was trampled to the ground
‘Twas then with realized fears,
THE FENCE WAS DOWN, THE BEEF WAS IN
THE CORNFIELD OF THE GREER’S!
The next morning out the window,
And with no spared expense,
Mr. Greer viewed with pride
His new barbed wire fence.
The county grapevine buzzed again
In Baxter county’s ears,
On the menu was Beef Wellington
At Ed and Mrs Greer’s.
