But, what about the short term turnaround in the above statement? Fact is, I’ll bet most of us miss out on these opportunities because we’re too busy to see them as they happen. Let’s say for example, I go to the local pet store to pick up pet supplies and I see someone pushing a shopping cart back toward the building. I walk up to the person; gently place my hands on the cart and say, “I’ll take that, thank you.” The shopper a little stunned by my action, smiles and nods and then heads back to her car.
Now it takes me a grand total of fifteen minutes to shop for my cats since they like the same brand of food. I am checked out at the register promptly and back outside hefting these heavy bags into the back of my Explorer in no time.
Then as I climb down out of the back of my truck and lay hands on my shopping cart, a pleasant gentleman walks up to me, smiles and says, “I’ll take that” with one hand already on the cart.” Let me just say that I too, am a little surprised since these were the same words that I used earlier. So, my first thought is simply, ‘Wow! That was quick!’ I smiled at the gentleman and kindly remarked, “Thank you and God bless you, sir” as he proudly wheeled the shopping cart into the store.
Now, here’s where the rubber meets the road. Do you see how simple it was to save someone else a few extra steps along their journey of life? When I initially took the shopping cart from the first shopper, I probably saved myself a good nine steps inside the store because I did not have to turn right or left to seek out a cart. Also the woman was spared at least that many steps in time to return her cart. The same truth applies to the second shopper.
Think about that as you decide what you could possibly do today to make someone else’s steps fewer and perhaps lighten their load along the way.
