A good set of tires might last about 50,000 miles, give or take a few. I know it’s hardly credible, but my husband has always kept good tires on our car, that is until the time he didn’t.
The time he didn’t was a Sunday morning when on our way to church, the car suddenly gave forth a rhythmic thump, thump, thumping sound. “What’s that!?” I asked as he maneuvered the car onto the graveled shoulder of the road.
“Flat tire,” he said. “I hope we have a spare,” I muttered. “Yeah, but I’ve never used it,” he replied. I realized the potential seriousness of the situation. So facing a dirty job in clean clothes, we got out of the car and opened the trunk.
Just then a white SUV pulled in behind us and a young man dressed in tee shirt and shorts hopped out and cheerily asked, “can I give you a hand with that flat tire?” I tell you truly, there ARE angels among us, and some of them are wearing a tee shirt and shorts.
As the old, flat tire was being removed, a second vehicle pulled in behind the SUV. This young man was clearly dressed for church because this second angel wore a tie and polished shoes! We all talked as the never-before-used spare tire was put on and the car lowered. Now as luck would have it, that space-saver spare tire was flat, too!
Being a true angel of mercy, the SUV driver then offered to take the spare tire and my husband to the nearest service station where he even paid for the air to inflate that new tire. Meanwhile, back at our disabled car, the second angel and I stood on the side of the road and shared our faith in a loving God who, in His merciful kindness toward us all, has given us the gift of His Son who paid the price for our salvation.
Very soon the inconvenience of a flat tire was over and our three vehicles pulled back onto the road. One was headed for a family reunion; the other two were headed for different church services And the two occupants in one of those cars were extremely grateful that those two strangers so cheerfully shared their gifts of the Spirit.
Paul said in Romans 12: 6-8 (RSV) “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them; . . . he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. “
