Far away, near the edge of an ancient forest, there stood a little cottage. A dwarf resided there, and every morning he went throught the same routine. At the first hint of sunrise, he would read his Bible, drink his coffee, and gather some eggs for breakfast.
At exactly one hundred paces to the left, stood a small castle. In that castle lived a giant. And every morning, he had the same routine. He would awaken at sunrise, read his Bible, squeeze orange juice, and pick apples.
The dwarf and the giant were the very best of friends. Everyday, they helped each other with the chores. Then at dusk they would watch the marvelous light show the faires put on as they descended from the treetops.
Then one day an opportunist moved in between them. He was a goblin, a very wicked goblin. He enjoyed devouring that which was good, and he knew of the faries that lived in the area. He wanted to steal their light, but couldn't when the giant or dwarf would possibly smite him down. No, he would wait for an opportune time.
The next morning the goblin lay in wait for the dwarf. When the dwarf emerged the goblin snickered. "Why don't you eat some apples for a change?" challanged the goblin. The dwarf was startled, but he managed to reply, "I'm fine with eating eggs" he said. The goblin continued, "Your friend eats apples all the time, maybe you don't because you can't reach the branches. You are cursed to scour the ground for mediocre eggs while the giant eats his apples and does not even consider you." The dwarf tried to ignore the goblin, but the insults continued. Then the goblin broke into laughter as the dwarf tripped and smashed his eggs. The dwarf had enough. He began to feel unimportant and even separated himself from his friend.
Noticing the separation, the goblin crept into a cave that had a small opening. He quickly built a fairy trap consisting of a heavy wooden cage baited with a shiny object. The goblin blended into the darkness of the cave and waited.
A pink fairy became curious about the object and the cage slammed down on top of her.
From his cottage, the dwarf heard her cry. But what could he do? He was just an inadequate little dwarf. The giant also heard the cry and started out for the forest. He found the dwarf waiting at the edge of the trees. The dwarf pleaded with him, "Please go and save her. You're sure to be able with your height and strength." The giant smiled and said, "My friend,we are no good divided. Can a body walk without a leg, or a hand save without an arm? We are of one body. Come, we go together!" At that the giant picked up the dwarf and ran through the forest.
The cave was too small for the giant, so the dwarf ran inside. He tried to lift the cage off of the fairy, but it was too heavy. So the giant reached inside and the dwarf told him which direction the cage was. The goblin leapt out of the shadows and lunged at the dwarf.
The giant felt a sense of urgency. So he reached as hard as he could, and tried to grasp the cage. Instead there was a scream followed by a "Plop!" And that was the end of the goblin. The giant moved his hand away from the mess and gently lifted the cage.
There was a big celebration that night. And the two friends never let something divide them again.
