Do not be surprised. When things happen in your life that you do not understand, that do not make sense, or that can not be explained, don’t be surprised. When people who you thought were your friends walk away from you, do not be surprised. When the plans that you lay with care and thought are destroyed by an event or circumstance you never would have imagined, do not be surprised. We are told in Scripture that we are given the spirit “…of a sound mind.” We know that the God we serve orders our steps and directs our paths. So if what we plan and prepare in our own human minds does not happen the way we thought it would, surprise should be the last thing we feel. After all, we as Christians know better than anyone that our lives are not our own. We know and understand that we have a calling greater than ourselves. It is only natural then, that God would have His own way in the shape of our lives. So why would we be surprised? We should even expect God to change our plans for us. We should expect His divine intervention into our individual lives. That is, of course, unless we are not living for Him. In that case, the natural thing would be to focus on ourselves and our own plans. It would follow suite that our selfish motives would hold preeminence in our thinking and that the will and hand of God would be the farthest thing from our minds. I can see, then, why you would be surprised. You should not be. Just because you don’t want Him in your life does not mean that He won’t be. Do not be surprised.
