She should’ve. Maybe he would’ve responded. Maybe they could’ve had one last chat.
But as she sat at the keyboard that night she thought, He wouldn’t be interested, would he? If it was just one picture I’d send it to him, definitely, but there’s like, five of them. His kids are all grown. I don’t think he’d really be into it… It’s too much. She left his name off of her distribution list.
And her old friend was killed in an accident ten days later.

It seemed like everywhere she turned she saw references to the trumpet, especially in her Bible reading. Is God trying to tell me something?
She wanted one, had for some time. Now it almost felt like she was meant to have one.
But I have no time for it. I barely remember how to read music. I’ve searched all over and they’re not cheap...
She waited. She researched some more.
And she saw trumpets everywhere: in the newspaper, on the radio… Her eye caught a toy one at the store. She even saw a trumpet cake in one of her cooking magazines.
She thought about that cheaper, but good quality trumpet she’d found. It should last me forever…
One day, she ordered one.

“I think I’m going to take the job at BRNG,” she said.
He was surprised. “I thought you wanted that job at Challenger.”
“I did. But…”
“You were so psyched about it.”
“I know, but... That one’s scarier. What if I can’t handle it?”
“You wanted to try out a leadership role, didn’t you?”
She nodded.
“You said you were tired of what you were doing.”
“I am. But...”
“Ya know, sometimes scary is good.”
She took the job that excited her.

She was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. Too beautiful to go out with me, he thought.
So, they became friends -- best friends.
She dated other guys.
He dated other girls.
They saw each other through the inevitable break-ups.
Deep down he knew she was the one for him.
One day they were just hanging out. Neither one of them was dating anyone.
It’s now or never, he thought.
“Hey, I got tickets to that concert Friday night. You wanna go with me, like, um, you know, like a date?”
She laughed and threw a pillow at him. “It’s about time you got around to asking me out! I was beginning to think I’d have to ask you out.”

“No way,” she said.
“Don’t think about it, just do it,” he said.
She stood at the top of an expert slope.
That’s the last time I listen to you, she thought. He said there was just one short steep part.
Her friend skied on.
The other stood with her for a moment. He was scared, too.
“The longer you stand here, the more scared ya get,” he said.
And he was off, down the headwall, his first -- and hers.
He fell, but got right back up and finished.
If he can’t do it, how can I?
They waited for her at the bottom.
People flew past her, bounding down the slope without a moment’s hesitation.
Just do it, she told herself.
But still she stood there, paralyzed with fear.
Just do it.
She slid, sideways, her skis perpendicular to the almost vertical slope.
About half-way down, when the worst of it was over, she tried a few turns.
She made it to the bottom.
And she didn’t fall.

Would he go with me? she wondered.
She wanted to go -- needed to go.
It had been too long, and now…
“Let’s go to church,” she said. “I think that one over by that pizza place is Catholic. You know the big white one?”
“Yeah, I know the one,” he said. “OK, let’s go.”
She called to find out the mass times.
And they went.
She tried not to cry, but the tears came anyway.
They prayed for their deceased friend.
She needed God in her life then -- and always.
They went back to church, not every week, not at first.
Sometimes he pushed her to go.
Their faith grew.
And he converted.
