Good morning to you, Sam. Well, unless you have just awakened from a severe coma, I hardly need to remind you that we are now into our fourth week of what some have called unprecedented environmental chaos. This all started with a severe hailstorm, worldwide in scope, that in less than twenty-four hours decimated 75% of the US wheat crop. The French wine industry predicts it will take ten years to return to full capacity. Believe me - you really don’t what to know what has happened to the maize harvest in Africa! Looking globally, experts predict that up to 35% of this year’s arable crops have been destroyed.
And if this wasn’t bad enough, ten days later we all learned about Artemis, an enormous meteor that astronomers swore blind would easily miss the Earth by a million miles. Well, if you ask me Sam, that’s proof enough that you can never trust a scientist! Artemis plunged into the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the largest tsunami in living memory. Entire cities in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines were wiped off the face of the earth, with tens of thousands of cargo ships being lost in the deluge. Furthermore rare metals within the body of the meteor appear to have contaminated fish stocks across a wide area, threatening the future livelihood of countless millions.
As most of our listeners will be aware, North Korea interpreted the tsunami as a military strike and launched its full compliment of nuclear ballistic missiles. Seoul was taken out in less than a minute, but worldwide Armageddon was averted – thanks to President Bush’s much maligned missile defence shield. Unfortunately the aerial detonations seem to have adversely affected the water supplies throughout much of Asia and the Middle East. Reports are still coming in of key reservoirs and rivers having become contaminated with radioactive fallout. Thankfully the water supplies throughout America and Western Europe remain safe to drink – fingers crossed for now.
That seemed to be the end of the matter until the bizarre happenings just five days ago. Scientists at NASA have confirmed that the intensity of sunlight falling on the earth’s surface has been reduced by 37%. And yet orbiting satellites show that the sun itself remains unchanged. There have been all sorts of reasons suggested, from pollution to global warming to a link with the P’yǒngyang missile explosions, but thus far nothing definite has been proved. All we know is that the sun, moon and stars are noticeably but inexplicably dimmer. Personally I can live without my two weeks of sun worship on the beach – what’s killing me is not being able to access my email. And my five-year-old daughter keeps asking when Cartoon Network will be back! Over to you, Sam…
Many thanks, Caroline. Yesterday we ran a feature on the looting that was breaking out in major towns and cities. Reports are coming in today of a very strange occurrence: there has been a huge increase in the number of people being admitted to hospital for snakebite poisoning. Yet witnesses say that the bites are not from snakes but from a hitherto unknown type of winged scorpion. Could this be some bizarre biological weapon? Or an unexpected consequence of over-reliance on GM crops? Whatever it is, we’ll keep you posted. But in the meantime stay indoors, keep your windows shut, and if anything even looks like it might be dangerous, squish it!
