“Shannon, wait up.”
I turned and saw Christopher running to catch up with me; my heart skipped a beat at the sight of his dark, rugged good looks. Look at me in my sweats, God this isn’t funny.
“Hi Christopher, what are you doing here on a Saturday night?” He’s so handsome.
“I stopped by your place and your neighbor said you were out walking.”
“Probably Carrie, she’s usually out watering around this time.”
He smiled that charming smile that always melted my insides. “You interested in a latte?” he said.
Trying to look nonchalant about being caught in my grubby sweats, I smiled back. “I would like that.”
“Sabell’s, okay with you?”
“That’s where I stop for my morning caffeine fix.” I laughed a nervous laugh.
“This might be a good time to try one of their iced-lattes.” He managed a nervous laugh of his own.
“Sounds like a plan.” How I kept myself from becoming hysterical at how funny we were being, I will never know.
We ordered ice-lattes to go. Enjoyed a leisurely stroll back to my house, where we sat on the front porch. When he left I wanted to pinch myself to see it I’d conjured him up.
“Judy, are you awake? You’re never going to believe what happened.”
I heard her yawn into the phone. “Why wouldn’t I be awake, it’s … it’s past midnight, this had better be good.”
“This is better than good; Christopher and I sort of went out.”
“How does one sort of go out?” I could hear her stifling another yawn. “Did he ask you out again?”
“That’s the problem; he didn’t.”
“He will, why don’t we meet for coffee before church in the morning?”
“Sounds good, I’ll see you then.”
“Shannon, he’ll call, you’ll see.”
I felt I had been shown the desires of my heart, but told it was not to be. I know it’s silly to be thinking that having an iced-latte together could lead to something more. I noticed Christopher when I first began attending church. I was mesmerized that first Sunday, as he led the praise and worship service. Yeah, I know how much of a cliché it sounds like, but I fell in love with him at first glance. Who am I kidding? This is good old birthday anxiety. Turning thirty next week is real depressing. Maybe, it just isn’t supposed to be, you know, marriage … children and all that goes with it.
After the Sunday services, I was intent on making a quick get-away, when I heard Christopher call my name.
“You’re in a hurry this morning,” he said, “I thought maybe we have lunch, if you’re not busy?”
We drove out to the river, and enjoyed lunch at the Riverside Inn. The sun rippled across the water creating thousands of diamonds twinkling in its path. diamonds? Oh, no there I go again. I couldn’t help laughing.
“Okay, share,” he laughed.
We shared more than laughter; we shared our hopes and dreams. I guess we had what some would call a whirl-wind romance. Six months later, I walked down the isle to my waiting prince. With tears in her eyes, my mom told me what a beautiful couple we made.
“Your blond good looks, your hair falling like a halo around your face.” she ran her fingers through the ends of my hair.
“I know,” I beamed, “exact opposites.”
Like He placed the stars in the sky, I knew He also had a great plan for my life. We built a home overlooking the river, where we walked the afternoon of our first real date. It wasn’t long before we were sitting on the shore watching our children play.
How swift the river of time flows, I thought, as I turned and watched Christopher escort our daughter down the aisle, giving her to her prince. As he joined me and took my hand in his, I felt His smile in the rays streaming through the stained glass windows.
