And smoothed some white cream on his face
His job was to bring joy to parties
And to teach kids about the Lord’s grace.
He had some balloons in his pocket
He’d twist them and make the kids smile
He had paper flowers and glitter
They’d have lots of fun, for a while.
Happy the Clown screwed on his red nose
It made noise when he blew it out
His hair was bright green, and so curly
His shoes were size forty, no doubt!
Those shoes made a squeak when he wore them
They were almost as loud as the noise
That was made when he sat on a pine cone
To amuse all the girls and the boys.
Happy the Clown wore polka dot suits
With red spots and one big red bow
And over his heart was a heart shape
With a cross in its center, to show
That Happy loves Jesus the Savior
And his heart now belongs to the Lord
Though Happy was glad to bring laughter
He always would talk of the Word.
Happy the Clown would dance up a storm
He’d dance as he sang of God’s grace
He’d trip and he’d fall on the carpet
But he’d still have a smile on his face
When kids asked why falling was funny
He’d tell them that it was because
It reminded him that all have fallen
From grace, but are saved through the Cross.
Happy the Clown could do magic tricks
He’d pull rabbits out of his hat.
When he sprinkled some salt, his shoes would light up
The kids always laughed about that.
He squirted the kids with a squirt gun
He pulled candy out of his ears
He told them that if they had problems
The Lord could dry up all their tears.
Happy the Clown took one big, deep breath
Before he drew on his red smile
He bowed his head humbly in silence
To talk to His Father, a while
As a clown, it’s his aim to bring laughter
And to celebrate life’s happy times
But Happy knew he must remember
The Source of his rhythms and rhymes.
Happy the Clown had blessings galore
But also had woes of his own
His headstrong young brother had vanished
And run off for dreams of his own
His wife had passed on, last October
His house needed lots of repair
And yet, when he thought of salvation
He knew that it couldn’t compare.
Happy the Clown knew that all these things
Could grieve him, or help make him strong
If he asked the Lord Jesus to help him
He always could sing a glad song
So he gave all his burdens to Jesus
And offered a sweet song of praise
And after he did this, he knew that
He could draw that big smile on his face.
Happy the Clown sat back in his chair
And asked for some help from Above
He loved to bring fun to kids’ parties
But his mission was teaching God’s love.
The tricks and the music he brought them
Might get their attention today
But more than the fun, he was praying
For a chance to serve Jesus, today.
Happy the Clown was ready to play
And ready to help those kids smile
Many might think that he ‘s just a big kid
Who gets paid to have fun, for awhile.
But maybe today there would be just one child
Who’d ask, “why’s that cross on your heart?”
And the Spirit would guide him, to tell them
And another new life could then start.
