The young girl picked up her instrument and walked towards the competition room, trying not to pay attention to the other young musicians waiting in the hallways for their auditions.
She was desperately trying to focus on the one who had brought her here and taught her everything she knew – none other than Jesus, her Lord. She was fully aware that at least 98% of the students here had private teachers, in addition to their lessons in school. Private lessons were simply not part of the equation in her family’s finances. Through the years, many encouraging teachers told her she had extraordinary talent. She had reached a crossroads where the financial and emotional support went only so far. She knew her success was directly related to her level of confidence and dependence on the Lord.
This was the moment of truth.
She entered the room and as she positioned her instrument, she quickly prayed. “Thank you dear Lord, for this gift you have given me and how you’ve taught me like no other could - with lovingkindness and excellence. I thank You that I am hidden in You. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I pray that You would help me now and be glorified by my skillful performance. In Jesus name. Amen.”
In an instant of uttering Jesus’ name, her fears and insecurities melted. As the bow touched the strings, she straightened up and perhaps added a half inch to her height. Looking at the music score in front of her, she felt like a valiant warrior facing her opponent with the confidence of an entire battalion behind her. It was the Lord of Lords, the commander of the Army, who went before her and strengthened her for the challenge ahead.
Her performance was powerful, flawless and received outstanding scores which qualified her to compete in a national orchestra ensemble. From there, she would be eligible for a substantial music scholarship.
Closing the door of the competition room behind her, she gratefully prayed; “Thank You, thank You dear Lord for grabbing hold of my weak hand with Your strong right hand. I am so grateful for the position I have in You because of what You did for me on the Cross. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is alive in me and empowers me to do the impossible in Your strength. I give You all the honor and glory for this excellent performance. Please continue to help me to remain hidden with You. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
