“Ok, I’ll hold out for you,” Trixie said to the boy in the picture.
September 1996:
“I think Matthew’s the one!” gushed Trixie. “He even looks kind of like the yellow haired boy in my old picture! He’s wicked cute. And he teaches kindergarten, so you know he loves kids, and…”
April 2000:
“That new guy in the choir asked me out the other day,” said Trixie.
Alarmed, Matthew said, “You told him you have a boyfriend, right?”
“Of course, but he’s never seen you. I always go to all those parties by myself. He assumed I was single.” She knew she was pushing his buttons, but she was getting tired of being with him, and yet not with him.
“You know I’m trying to finish up my thesis…”
“I know, but I hardly ever see you. I miss you,” she said.
He brushed the hair out of her eyes. “I’m doing this for us, too.”
“I know… but you can’t live just for the future, you have to have some fun now.”
November 2001:
Matthew got down on bended knee, opened a small black velvet box and said, “Trixie, will you do me the honor of becoming my beloved wife?”
Trixie couldn’t believe her ears. With tears I her eyes she whispered, “Yes!”
“Really?” he said.
Trixie laughed, “Really.”
He put the sparkling diamond ring on her finger. It was a perfect fit.
“How did you know my size?”
“God told me,” he said. Trixie raised an eyebrow.
“I had a dream we were shopping for engagement rings. You decided on a simple oval diamond, but of course I insisted on a larger one.” He winked. “The jeweler in my dream said you were a perfect size five.”
“This ring is exactly like the one in my dream. It’s one of a kind -- and it was a size five. It’s meant to be, Babe. We’re meant to be -- together -- forever.” Matthew wiped a tear from his eye.
“Forever,” said Trixie as she snuggled up to her fiancé. She had never been so happy.
They slow danced around Trixie’s small living room, teary, but laughing, and very happy, together, forever...
March 2009:
God, it’s been seven years. Sometimes I don’t think Matthew will ever be ‘ready.’ They’d just had yet another fight. I can’t wait forever. Is this marriage really meant to be? Please, give me a sign, thought Trixie.
She sighed. “What about what I want,” she muttered. “He doesn’t have to take his temperature everyday… to prevent what I want.” She slammed the door to their bedroom. And her precious old picture crashed to the floor.
She still had it after all those years. Her mom had framed it for her after her first serious break-up. She had titled it, “MY HOZBInD ANb Me.” Her kindergarten crayon drawing had always given her hope. Hope that somewhere out there her dream man was waiting for her – a man who wanted to have kids.
Matthew rushed in when he heard the sound of glass shattering.
He found Trixie sitting beside the picture on the hardwood floor, weeping. Is this shattered glass a sign of our broken dreams? she wondered.
Matthew gently wiped away the slivers of broken glass and handed the picture to her. He retrieved the vacuum cleaner and set to work, cleaning up her mess.
Trixie was staring at her old drawing as if she’d never seen it before. Without the matt board covering the uneven edges of the paper, she saw that she’d signed and dated the picture in the lower left corner, “TRIXIE 3/27/77” -- with one backwards seven. But that wasn’t what captivated her.
She looked up at her husband and said, “It really is you.”
Trixie wasn’t mad anymore. She couldn’t even remember what they’d been fighting about. She handed him the picture.
She didn’t have to tell him that “MACHOUOW,” written in the upper right corner of the picture, was kindergarten for MATTHEW.
Maybe that was a sign for him, too.
They embraced. “I’m sorry,” she said.
“Me, too,” said Matthew. He cleared his throat. “Ya know… I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately and… maybe it’s time we started trying to make a kindergartener of our own.”
“Really?” Trixie asked.
“Really,” said Matthew. ”We’ll let God decide if the time is right.”
In the warmth of her husband’s embrace Trixie cried again, but this time they were happy tears.
