”Golda Meier? I haven’t heard that name in quite a while.”
“No, not Golda Meier. I said, it’s not very warm in here.”
“What? Larry Norman’s here? Did he bring his guitar?”
“I think I’ll just go over and sit by the fire to toast my tootsies.”
”Go see Tootsie? But I don’t even like Dustin Hoffman.”
“Oh, be quiet you old coot and help me with my shawl.”
”Eh, callin’ the shah an old goat? They don’t even have them shahs anymore. Now, the Ayatollah, he’s the one who looked like an old goat.”
“Aren’t you cold? Let me get you your sweater.”
”Why would I be sweatin', it’s cold in here.”
“I know it’s cold in here. That’s why I think you should wear your sweater. Let me sew that button back on, and fix that little tear. Once I’m done sewing that you’ll be as good as gold. I am a champion seamstress, remember?”
”Sew what?”
“What do you mean, so what? You don’t care that I’m a pretty good seamstress?”
”Huh?”
“What?”
”Oh. Not so what, but sew …what? What do you want to sew?”
“I want to sew that button on your sweater, I said, and also fix that little tear so you’ll be as good as gold.”
”I’m already as good as cold, that’s why I need my sweater.”
“I’m just trying to be nice. Remember, what goes around comes around. Or, as the good book says, ‘A man reaps what he sows.’ ”
”But a woman sews what he rips.”
“When he wants to be clever, then he hears me.”
“So, how about that sweater, dearie. It is, after all, cold in here.”
“All right, already. How about a little television while I finish up your wrap. Go ahead, let’s see what’s on.”
” ‘My three Sons?' Why, I haven’t seen old Fred MacMurray in over 30 years.”
“Just take your sweater and put it on. I think I did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself.”
”Sweetie, that’s just about the best job of sewing I’ve seen around these parts in quite some time. Thank you, honey.”
“What?”
”I thank you, honey. “
“Well, I think you’re funny, too.”
