In the secular world anniversaries are celebrated for almost everything. Despite the fact the word means the marking of annual event, we have decided to have an ‘anniversary’ almost everyday of the week. I listen with great humour to young lovers who celebrate weekly the time they spend together. Let’s ignore the fact that perhaps before the year is actually up, they would have split up and moved on.
Adults too have their significant days to have a good time. Not so young lovers mark special days on the calendar and it becomes a tradition for all to make merry.
I think fondly of my Mum who thought her birthday should have been a national holiday. She loved that day very much and was disappointed when we pretended to forget. My Dad looks to Father’s Day as a special occasion and of course their wedding anniversary was equally important.
As regards to myself, my husband always got me something special and planned an evening of delight on the anniversary of our engagement. Me, well I celebrated the wedding day as the ‘special time for me’.
But that’s the secular world. What about our spiritual anniversary, when we got saved or our faith was renewed. Can you remember when you heard that still small voice, calling you ever so gently to submit to the love and will of the Heavenly Father?
I most certainly can, and each day I give thanks that during Advent 1976 I renewed my faith and decided to follow Jesus all the way. For this reason Advent has a special meaning to me other than the fact that it is the beginning of the new church year in my denomination [Anglican]. I look forward to Advent and see it as a new opportunity to be used for and by the Lord. Even while I’m writing this article my thoughts are on Advent coming and the special ways I will worship the Lord. I look forward to the Advent hymns that we only sing at that time of the year, I look forward to the extra services of praise and prayer that are planned [usually by me and my ministry group] and yes I look forward to the coming of our soon coming King.
So I ask you, do you remember your anniversary when you made the Christ, Lord of your life and, God of your salvation?
