Volunteers are like weeds. They spring up everywhere. Every empty spot will eventually host one or more. You can find them in hospital gift shops, lobbies, and patient rooms. They play pianos, sing, serve refreshments, and read to patients in nursing homes. They flock to the scene of disasters. They risk their lives to fight fires. They serve as foster parents. They shovel snow, cut lawns, and deliver meals for the elderly.
Churches depend on volunteers to teach, provide music, lead the youth, maintain the property, and a thousand other activities. They are an absolute essential to every congregation’s life and ministry.
I could go on. I doubt it would be possible to place a dollar value on all the work done by volunteers in even a single day. But, that’s O.K. Volunteers aren’t in it for the dollars, anyway. Most are in it for the personal satisfaction of knowing in some small way they’ve improved the world they live in.
There are those who view volunteers with a jaundiced eye. They claim volunteers are simply meeting some unfulfilled need in their own lives. They need to be appreciated, loved, or needed. They need to atone for some forgotten misbehavior in their past. They need a sense of worth. I beg to differ. I believe, volunteering, for whatever motive, is the most unselfish of all activities.
Our God has created each of us as a unique being. We each have our own desires, gifts, and challenges. He puts within each of us a longing to be needed and appreciated. To satisfy this longing, He gives us abilities and opportunities to serve others. God bless the volunteers! In all they do, they provide comfort, security, and love to those in need.
By the way, have you noticed, “volunteer” is also a verb? I would just about bet, if you aren’t already doing so, you can find a place to volunteer your services. Why not get out of the house and do something to serve others? Try the local hospital, nursing home, or senior center, the Cub Scouts, MHMR center, or your Church. There’s a long list of good causes. There’s a place for you. If you find it, you will also find three wonderful surprises, new friends, a new sense of satisfaction, and new blessings from God.
Remember the words of Jesus, who said,“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matt 25:40 NIV)
