“What are you thinking right now, Mom?”
“I was just thinking, how wonderful life is." She turned her head to look at him. “Robert, are you still keeping up with your French?”
“Yes, ma’am. I am.”
“And have you been practicing your Spanish?”
“Yes, mom. I’m still practicing my Spanish.”
“And what about Social Studies?”
“Mom, I’m doing fine. You’re the one that. . .”
It was very quiet. He couldn’t speak anymore. His throat was getting dry, it reminded him she might be thirsty. “Would you like more water?”
“Yes, please.” It went quiet again. “So, your Father explained to you what’s going to happen to me?”
“Yes, Mom, he did.”
“And in how long?”
“Yes. He told me.”
“How’s he handling it?” she asked.
“Dad is Dad.” Robert didn’t really want to tell her he’d never seen his father cry before. “You know him. He’s always angry, but now he’s just angry and quiet.”
“You two never really got along. I’m hoping that that will change.”
“But he sure loves you, Mom.”
“Your father loves you too. You know, it’s been sixteen years since the accident. Most men would have been out the door and have not turned back. But your father took care of me and you.”
“That he did. I guess I love him too. Just don’t tell nobody. It could be our little secret, couldn’t it?”
“I suspect he already knows.” Her gaze focused sideward of his shoulders.
There was his father, smiling of all things. Robert looked up at him. “Hey, Pop!”
“Hey.”
“Well, Dad, I just wanted to say, that the Lord loves you and I do too.” He returned glance to his mom. “My mother taught me that one.”
