A guiding light in the galaxy,
A bright star who is your own choice
Proclaiming the Gospel with mighty voice
So all will know that Christ is Lord.
Oh, no, why I would ne’er be heard.
My voice is weak and it won’t obey;
Others might stumble and lose their way
If guided by my feeble light.
Their souls may flounder in darkest night.
And, Lord, I could not, if you will pardon
Be a tree you have planted in nature’s garden,
My branches laden with luscious fruit
To tempt the sinner and check his route
So that he may eat of the life-giving Word.
Why, my shoulders are small; it is absurd
To believe I could ever be this tree
Filled with the fruit of epiphany.
I can scarcely bear the sins I own.
Could I bear sinners to your throne?
But, Lord, allow me before I die
To be a rainbow in Heaven’s sky --
A shimmering crescent you have sent
To a rainy day as its ornament,
A faint reflection of Heaven’s bright scope.
Then souls who are fainting along life’s way
May glimpse my rainbow in their dismay,
Take heart and sense God’s presence here
That future rainbows may appear.
In addition, Lord, it would be so grand
To be a keyboard within your hand,
Writing words to encourage those brighter lights,
Urging them on to greater heights.
I cannot teach or prophesy,
I cannot preach -- I dare not try.
But I can take my thoughts in hand
And write at my Lord God’s command
To cheer the saints along their way.
I’ll be like Paul and write today!
