The ensemble arrives for the performance dressed in their feathered hats, fur coats, and alligator boots. They line up, each in his prescribed place.
The lily pads are like a boat for the bullfrog. He squeezes his lungs while keeping his mouth and nostrils shut. His ribbit sounds like a foghorn as he practices the deep sounds to get the right pitch.
The rattlesnake sits nearby polishing his rattles in the dirt before shaking his tail like a tambourine.
The wolf gives several soulful howls before he is satisfied with the bay.
The cricket provides the chirp in rhythm with the other creatures as he rubs his wings together.
The owl’s hoot is added to the noise of the choir. His pattern is simple as he waits for the reply of the next owl. They take turns hooting.
The hiss of the alligator carries a rhyme in tune to the chirping of the seagull sitting on his head.
The deer stand by the bog, flicking their ears and giving a soft whooshing sound.
The black and white skunk gives a sweet bird-like whistle as his voice joins the choir.
The high-pitched trill of the male bat supplies the tenor range in the voices.
The fireflies light the pathways and glow in time to the beating of the rabbit’s foot on the ground.
The jaguar jumps into a tree and joins in with his rich deep purr. He closes his eyes as he thinks of the tune he is humming.
As evening fades into night, the blush of the moonlight casts a soft light on the creatures. The angels watch as hundreds of animals and insects line up around the bog. Each has a part to play in tonight’s performance.
The geese and the ducks swim through the pond, giving a swishing sound, like a brush on a drum.
The chatter of the squirrels seems to complete the choir.
The rehearsal is nearly done. As the moon streams upon the choir, the angels quietly leave. This performance is not for them.
There is a moment of silence. The owl gives a single hoot, signifying it is time to begin.
Tonight, all God’s creatures put aside their fear of one another and play a finely crafted melody for an audience of One.
