The lone man in gray
And on it he sat
Day after day
His nose in a book
He rarely looked up
At the people around him
No “Hey there, what’s up?”
He was quiet and studious
At times he would smile
Sometimes he’d stop
To pray for a while
Children ran past
And couples embraced
The seasons would change
As he sat in his place
Day after day
He sat and he read
He prayed till he left
Then went home to bed
Never noticing sunsets
Or the birds or the flowers
Or laughter, or crying
He just sat there for hours
One day an angel
Appeared at his bench
He touched the man’s shoulder
The man didn’t flinch
The angel tapped harder
To get his attention
The man was enraged
And full of dissension
Wait! said the angel
I have something to say
The Lord sent me here
For you’ve gone astray
“How can you say that?”
The man was aghast
“I’ve prayed every day
Been redeemed from my past”
But you sit on this bench
With your nose in a book
You don’t even see
You don’t even look
“But this book is the Bible
It’s full of God’s word
You don’t know what you’re saying
This is absurd!”
Ah, but I do
The angel looked sad
You’re so busy reading
You forgot to be glad
And rejoice in God’s glory
His life all around
Interact with the world -
God’s blessings abound
God didn’t tell us
To read and to yearn
Without then applying
The lessons we’ve learned
Each day you sit here
You’re wasting time
To show others God’s love
And let His light shine
He wants you to go forth
Be active, alive
Using God’s gifts
To help others to thrive
Your time is coming
Even now as we talk
Your purpose is out there -
Stand up, walk the walk!

"God didn’t tell us
To read and to yearn
Without then applying
The lessons we’ve learned"
This so neatly sums up such an important truth - one that especially readers like me need to learn, and keep on re-learning.
Congratulations on winning only 1 of 2 Daveys at this level! Well done!!
