The Bible is silent as to why he chose to see the Master under the cover of darkness. Was it perhaps the fear of being seen? Or maybe a busy daytime schedule preventing him from a meeting in the light of day? Or the Pharisees questioning his meeting with the Rabbi? We may never know.
What is important is Jesus expounding on the Kingdom of God with the hope of bringing Nicodemus to a saving knowledge of Christ. Believing in the long-awaited arrival of their Messiah.
"You must be born again", Jesus said. John 3:16
"How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born." Nicodemus asked. John 3:4
"Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God." Jesus said. John 3:3
In the fourteenth chapter of St. John, Jesus said no one comes to the Father except through me. How does one become saved? Through the One who holds the keys to eternal life.
Trusting in the man called Jesus.
As a side note: "The man called Jesus" is spoken by the man who was born blind. John 9:11
