I get a lot of emails. Most of them I don’t even remember signing up for, like ads, newsletters, reminders about things I forgot I once cared about. One morning, after hitting “unsubscribe” for the tenth time in a row, I sat back and thought: What else in my life needs an unsubscribe button?
It didn’t take long to find the answer.
I’m subscribed to a whole lot more than just emails. I’m subscribed to the buzz of my phone, the endless scroll of social media, and the pressure to respond to never-ending messages. I’m present in so many places that sometimes I miss being truly present where I actually am.
We live in a time where our presence is split a dozen different ways. Physically, we might be sitting at the table with our family, but mentally, we’re checking the notification that just pinged on our phone. We show up to meetings or coffee dates or even church services, but our minds are cycling through to-do lists, news feeds, or someone else’s highlight reel.
We are more connected than ever, but we’re also more disconnected. Sometimes that leads to us being distracted, drained, and alone.
Jesus unsubscribed during His time on Earth. Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus intentionally stepping away from the crowds to be alone with the Father. (Luke 5:16) Jesus had perfect priorities. He wasn’t rushed or ruled by notifications. He knew when to speak and when to listen, when to engage and when to unplug. If the Son of God needed to unsubscribe from the noise in order to be fully present, how much more do we? We can follow His example.
What if you “unsubscribed” from one distraction today?
• Turn off notifications for an hour.
• Delete the app that drains your peace.
• Put your phone in another room during dinner.
• Say no to the pressure to be online all the time.
Instead, choose to be present in each moment, with the people who surround you. Each moment is a gift – don’t miss out!
