At the table with the king??”
An incredulous cry from Lo Debar rings
At the news that Ziba brings.
“I am of the house of Saul
Does not the King recall?
Do I not bear the enemy’s name
Knows he not that I am lame?”
“King David loathes the blind and lame
On his mercy, they have no claim
I would not, could not, deign to be
In the presence of His Majesty”
Nevertheless, to Jerusalem
Mephibosheth, in awe, has come
Prostrate before the king he lays
Trembling, his homage pays.
Sad memories swirl around in a maze
Of his tumultuous childhood days,
Of years in hiding, for fear of life
A life, with harsh struggles, rife.
Once the son of the royal prince
Just a crippled fugitive since
Is this now the end for me,
I dread the royal decree!
A voice, warm and full of grace
Breaks through the soundless space,
“Mephibosheth, there’s naught to fear
In kindness, I summoned you here.
For Jonathan, your dear father’s sake
From my table, you will always partake
The lands of Saul, I will fully restore
All of his are yours, evermore.”
In wonder, Mephibosheth bows,
Before what royal favor bestows.
For ever so long in poor obscurity
To now dine in the King’s company?
Rich grace on one so unsightly,
The grandson of a sworn enemy
How can there such mercy be
On a man as unworthy as me?
“A dead dog I am, O king, you know
Why then, such great regard, show?”
In grateful thoughts, stands the King,
Memories of Jonathan’s kindness, bring
When cruelly hunted by Saul for years
He, as a strong defense, appears.
I have not forgotten the covenant, son,
For his sake, your new life has begun.
2Sa 9:3
And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet (ESV)

And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I? (ESV)
