The world can be a cruel place and it is only people who are concerned with the welfare of others will go that extra mile to help others in need. With economic hardship, broken family relationships, and the deception of Satan everyone wants to ensure that he is safe so every attempt is made to ensure he “minds his own business” even if it means neglecting to help others.

In September 1992 a man was picked up off the street downtown when his case was brought to the Missionary for the Poor's attention.

This homeless man was beaten up in a fight and left. He was lying on the street for a week thousands of people stepped around him, but they all went to their businesses.

The Missions of the Poor came to his assistance, took him in, bathed him, and patiently picked all the maggots out of the wounds in his head. According to the missionary, “They were eating him up”.

But with love for another brother in danger, he was rescued. Another worker remarked:

“Truly love called this man back from the dead, hence he was called Lazarus”.

In reflecting on this true tale, a question comes to mind:

“Would you be included in one of the thousands who passed this man on the road?” Or would you be a helper to even seek aid for him?

“Whatever your answer, will it fit in the criterion that our Lord is asking us?”

It is when we can truly face ourselves and do what is right from a heart of empathy that we will be able to say we love.

One of my Pastors always said we are to put ourselves in a place where we can say:

“There goes I but for the mercies of God”.

However, this feeling of compassion can only come about once we have a heart of flesh that comes because of a renewed heart in Jesus Christ.

A good example of ‘compassion’. The first and third paragraphs seemed to be missing some punctuation that would have made it flow a little better.

This is an interesting story. I'm sure many people can relate to it in today's world. Speaking of today's world, instant gratification is important especially when a new book or story can be found with a simple click. Instead of starting off with a lesson, you might want to start with a vivid description of the missionary finding the man. That could pull the reader in right away. Trust that your story will deliver your message to the readers without the need to spell it out for them. I liked your characters and the message found in this story. There's something everyone can take away from reading this, which is a great thing.
