I live on a farm in southwestern Ontario with my husband. A few years ago, I lost the use of my left leg. To some degree, I could still walk and maintain, my workload but every once in a while and I would lose my balance, tumble and fall. Decisively, after one of these falls I was admitted to hospital to find out what was wrong.
After spending 14 weeks in the hospital, undergoing a series of x-rays, MRI, brain scans, and the thoughts of not knowing what was happening. I finally received my prognosis. Myelopathy, an injury to the spinal cord due to severe compression.
On September 10th, 2021 I underwent surgery C2 – C6. On October 26, the same year I returned to my home in a wheelchair and needing lots of care. I was delighted to be back in my own home but my life has changed drastically.
Since then I have had a lot of amazing personal care support workers. Maria was assigned to help care for me in my home July 2023. Maria is originally from Argentina. Her husband and their young son came to Canada about six years ago.
Every morning Maria arrive arrives on time, like sunshine on a cloud, rainy day. She knocks and enters. "Good morning Lynn, how are you today? How was your night?”
She under understands my vulnerability, and how important my personal hygiene is. She is sensitive to my privacy and meets any special needs in my personal care.I sensed her empathy and general desire to make my life better. We connected instantly.
I believe, Father has sent her into my life because she has been such a blessing. Her approach to my care has been much different than the others. She is very thoughtful, kind, full of happy energy. The most important thing I needed was to be able to laugh, she brings humour and joy into my life.
She makes me feel valued and important always including my thoughts. "What would you like to do first today?”
She preserves my independence, seeking my input, after all she says, "We are a team, we are work together to make your life better.”
Once a week I have what Maria calls spa day. She brings a little music into the mix. Sometimes Argentinian music from her culture, other times it's my favourite Christian singers.
Maria also includes my husband, she has become more than just a personal care worker but a compassionate, valued friend. We have shared laughter and tears and many wonderful stories that have enriched both our lives.
There are two other women who come to help me. Carrie a registered kinesiologist who has organized my exercise program. Janet is like a breath of fresh air, she comes daily to help me perform my exercises.
We have two sons, one lives with his family in Alberta. They popped in and out of my life my by text and phone. The other son lives a few streets away from our home. Yesterday the grandsons popped in for a visit. "Nana, we came for a visit, we just wanted to give you a hug.”
Then I heard the door close. A few minutes later the door opened again, I saw my little grandsons getting a cup from the cupboard filling it with water to place a handful of bright, sunny yellow dandelion flowers. "Nana, we picked these flowers for you.”
And a wonderful husband who cooks my meals, does all the shopping, laundry and pays all the expenses.
How could I not be thankful and rejoice over all these blessings in my life.

It is refreshing to hear a person of faith who has gone through so much adversity, yet still believes as you so clearly do.
Thank the LORD for your helper, she sounds like an "Angel" on earth.
