The school year has ended so a report of my performance and the class is on its way to my parents.
To keep my grades up was a challenge. It was on a “roll-a-coaster” ride. I have tried but it was not consistent. Now I will face the daunting scrutiny of my parents. Every day I await the arrival of the postman. I wanted this part of my school life to be over.
“Ring, ring”, was the sound that introduced the postman. Instead of allowing him to place the letters in the box, I went and took them from him. Among them was the letter from my school, “WELMORE HIGH” As this was a family affair, I placed it down on the dining table. My two brothers' reports came earlier, and they got heaps of congratulations plus promises of tokens. I offered them congratulations too.
For my report perusal we had dinner first, then Mama took up my report.
“Carl, your punctuality, and comments from most of your teachers are good, Congratulations”.
“But your report is terrible. Are you telling me that you can only amass 30 marks for Mathematics, English language 40 marks, History 25 marks. Why are you not learning? Why are your marks so low? You are placed 20th position from a class of 30? This is unacceptable.
There was an awkward silence. I was speechless.
“What do you have to say, Carl?” Mama questioned.
“I repeat, what do you have to say, why?” she demanded.
I bowed my head. I opened my mouth, but no words came. Looking around, I was on trial.
My brothers said nothing, and my father stood, then spoke.
“If he comes in the 20th position with grades like that, can you imagine what the others who come behind him get?
Suddenly the tense atmosphere was changed with laughter and everyone, including my mother, left me smiling in the dining room.
It was as if I was released from the sentence of?
I can say that experience taught me the truth of scripture in Proverbs 15:1 “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” KJV.
