Today, there is a special day to commemorate this “good medicine “as worldwide Laughter Day which is on the first Sunday of May. The latter was founded by Dr. Madam Katarian who sees laughter as a universal language that can unite people and promote world peace, health, and understanding.
Research has provided evidence of how a merry heart can bring about healing, for example, Dr. Hunter Adams believes that “healing should be a loving interchange, not a business transaction”. He also believed that fun and laughter should be within the hospital setting. As a result, professional clowns were brought into the hospital to allow the patients to laugh, and changes took place within the patients.
Dr. William F. Fry studied laughter and called it Getotology. He discovered that laughter has many positive effects on emotions which alter heart rate, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and bowel movement.
Here are some examples that bring out that” a merry heart doeth good as a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”. James, a young boy, went to give the dog a pot of spoiled soup because it was not refrigerated. As he threw out the soup, he said:
“You see them big pieces of meat ya, you think yu get it…” Jamaican dialect. (You see these pieces of meat, do you think you’re getting it?) The family members heard the outburst and smiled. Clearly, he was sad because it was a waste of resources. He was not thinking about the ill effects on him. The family members were sorry about the loss, but his muttering caused them to look at the situation in a lighthearted manner.
Another example is seen when patients who watched Motives recovered from their ailments and in some cases, some were saved from surgeries.
Yet another example can be seen in a teaching-learning environment. I can recall many years ago when I was teaching my two young sons the use of propositions. Both of them showed understanding of the usage so I asked the older son to use the best proposition for the following sentence. The secretary sat _______________ the Chairman.
His response was “The secretary sat under the Chairman.”
The other son burst out in laughter. I also joined in laughing, and you know what took place. If you said all teaching ceased. You are correct.
They have never forgotten that experience because of the humor that it evoked from that setting.
The benefits of laughter are reduced stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline) increasing immune cells, and infection-fighting antibodies enhancing the effectiveness of the T cells.
Solomon did not have knowledge of this research but the wisdom that the Almighty gave him allowed him to speak this truth. No wonder “Every word of God is pure.”
